We have had voters inquire recently about changing their party affiliation. The only way in Ohio you can do that is by voting a party ballot in a partisan primary election. Even numbered years are more likely to have a partisan primary election than odd numbered years, so you should have to opportunity to choose your party affiliation in the upcoming May 5, 2026 Primary Election! Here is a post from Verify Ohio by Ohio Secretary of State that discusses it.
Why doesn’t Ohio's voter registration form ask for party affiliation?
In Ohio, your political party affiliation is determined by the type of ballot you vote in a partisan primary election. If you vote a Republican ballot, you’re registered by law as a Republican, likewise for a Democratic ballot. Voters who choose not to vote in a partisan primary election or who vote an issues-only ballot are registered as Unaffiliated. State lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow voters to identify their political party affiliation on their voter registration record.
