Huge thanks to Christine, one of our dedicated volunteers, who regularly picks up delicious donations from Noe Valley Bakery and gets them where they’re needed in our community.

And a big thank you to the team at Noe Valley Bakery for making these goodies and helping keep good food out of the landfill and on people’s tables.

It’s a great partnership that makes a real impact: a generous food donor + a committed volunteer = good food getting where it’s needed most.

For this month's Volunteer spotlight, we talked with Eric Machealer about his family’s involvement with ExtraFood since its beginning. Eric’s wife Carrie, being one of the first employees of ExtraFood brought Eric and their son, Ian, into the world of food recovery back in 2013. For the Machealders', food rescue has become a constant in their lives.

Some of their early rescues were doing the farmer’s market together as a family. It didn’t take long for Eric to develop a passion for food rescue because of its obvious social and environmental benefit. As Eric and his family’s life evolved, he would continue fitting in food rescue where he could. Even though based in Marin, he would pick up prepared food in the city since Ian would go to high school in San Francisco.

As Ian is heading off to college this year, Eric and he dedicated his last summer at home to rescuing food as a father son team. While picking up Woodlands Tiburon or spontaneous trips here and there, they found joy helping the community and spending quality time together.

Thank you to the Machleader family for their commitment to food rescue, a great reminder that taking care of the community is a group effort!

Meet our new Marin ExtraFood Staff Driver, Axel!
Since starting in June, Axel says he’s received nothing but the warmest of welcomes from the Recipients and Donors. His favorite part of the job is the kindness he sees within the ExtraFood community. From Receivers, Recipients, and Volunteers, Axel says “it’s a beautiful community working together, helping each other out, I’m happy to be a part of it!
Axel has been wonderful at learning his Recipients’ food needs, and going the extra mile (literally) to ensure they get relevant donations to their community’s’ food needs. He’s been loving the drive and the scenic routes Marin has to offer. On his off days, Axel enjoys being outdoors hiking, cooking, or riding horses!
Look out for the Purple ExtraFood Truck as Axel picks up Safeways, Whole Foods, Costco, or is delivering some of our Share the Bounty backyard and farm produce and soups from our SOUPer Food Kitchen.

Today, we’re honoring Dolly for the incredible legacy of generosity and service she built in her community and far beyond. From her philanthropy to her commitment to children, education, and the people who need a helping hand, she showed us what it looks like to use your platform to make a difference.

That spirit feels pretty close to the heart of what we do at ExtraFood.

Every day, people across our community give their time, resources, food, and energy to help someone else.

A grocery store donates food.
A volunteer or our drivers pick it up.
A community organization gets it where it’s needed.
And perfectly good food becomes a meal instead of waste.

Dolly’s example reminds us that small acts of generosity can ripple outward, and that when a community shows up for one another, the impact can be enormous.

We’re grateful for the inspiration, Dolly.

Two weeks into gleaning at the Alemany Farmers' Market, and we’re already feeling so welcomed!

The vendors have been incredibly generous and genuinely excited to see ExtraFood at the market each week. The Alemany team has also been wonderful to work with; they have been supportive, collaborative, and enthusiastic about making sure beautiful, fresh food finds its way to our community instead of going to waste.

And the produce has been amazing! Along with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, we’ve recovered some incredible Asian specialty produce that our recipient partners were especially thrilled to receive. These are foods that can be harder for them to access regularly and that reflect the cultures and cooking traditions of the communities they serve.

We’re so grateful to the vendors, market staff, and volunteers who have made these first few weeks such a success. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings!
