This past Saturday, members of Puget Sound Fire attended the King County Fire Chief’s Association’s Diversity and Recruitment Workshop. More than 150 people attended this semi-annual event, which was geared toward members of the BIPOC community, women, limited-English-speaking community members, and/or those with no prior fire service experience who would like to learn more about a rewarding career in Fire and EMS. The goal of this event was to provide valuable information, mentorship, and connections to help individuals start a successful career in public service.

The event featured six breakout classes to help prepare individuals for key elements of joining the fire service:

• Written firefighter exam prep
• Oral board interview prep
• Wellness and fitness prep
• Medical, psych, and background check prep
• A Day in the life of a firefighter
• Networking with firefighters from area fire departments

In addition to the breakout classes, a diverse group of speakers from around the region, including Puget Sound Fire’s Firefighter Temesgen Zegergis, spoke to help attendees better understand why they chose a rewarding career in fire and life safety and what that journey was like from their unique perspective. A special thanks to the Bellevue Fire Department and Bellevue College for hosting Saturday’s workshop. The next King County Fire Chief’s Association’s Diversity and Recruitment Workshop will be in the fall of 2026. We hope to see you there!

When you hear sirens or see the lights of first responder vehicles, if traffic allows, you should move as far to the right as safely as possible and come to a complete stop until the first responders have passed. If you are unable to pull over to the right or stop, slow down and try to leave a clear path for the vehicle(s) to get through. Do not stop in the middle of an intersection. Pulling to the right and yielding to emergency vehicles at intersections is one way to make sure we get to the emergency the fastest and safest possible.

According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double, or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. When using an AED, the chances of survival are even higher.

If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a child, a spouse, a parent, or a friend.

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. Teens are getting ready for a summer full of fun, friends, and free time. Unfortunately, summer also means more teens are involved crashes that result in injury and death. These crashes are 100% preventable.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, teen driving-related fatalities increase significantly. Together, we can continue to work to stop the number one killer of teens in the US—car crashes, particularly those caused by distracted driving. Crashes due to distracted driving are 100% preventable. “You Have the Power” to be a part of the solution!

Puget Sound Fire would like to remind you to eliminate distractions while you’re driving. Hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, and keep your mind on your driving.

Today, Puget Sound Fire honors the men and women of the United States armed forces and their families who made sacrifices while serving our country. We are always grateful for those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

In addition, on this Memorial Day, we recognize those in fire, EMS, and law enforcement that served for their communities and are no longer with us, especially our brothers, Deputy Chief Jimmy Webb and Captain Brandon Minneman. We will always remember them.

In observation of this holiday, Puget Sound Fire headquarters office is closed and will reopen tomorrow, May 26 at 8:00am. As always, if you have an emergency, please dial 9-1-1.

Have a safe, healthy, and enjoyable holiday!
