Four communities. One message: survivors are not alone. 💜

This October, neighbors in Covington, Puyallup, Renton, and Kent will gather for Purple Light Nights® Community Walks to honor those we have lost, support survivors, and make our community’s commitment to ending domestic violence visible.

You don’t need to have the perfect words or a personal connection to participate. Simply showing up says something powerful: We believe survivors. We stand beside them. And everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home.

Strong services begin with strong leaders. 💜

Five members of DAWN’s leadership team recently completed a three-day, in-person Management Fundamentals training through Archbright:
• Elba, Director of Programs
• Verenise, Shelter Advocacy Supervisor
• Milena, CSO Supervisor
• Diana, Director of Finance and Operations
• Ada, Community Advocacy Manager

The training gave them dedicated time to strengthen their management skills, learn alongside one another, and bring new tools back to the teams they lead.

For a small organization like DAWN, funding for professional development is incredibly valuable. Thanks to a Workforce Stabilization grant from King County’s Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy, we’re able to invest in our leaders, build organizational capacity, and support efforts to retain the skilled, compassionate staff survivors depend on.

We’re grateful to King County VSHSL for making this opportunity possible and proud of these five leaders for continuing to learn and grow in service to DAWN’s mission!

Every day, DAWN’s staff listen without judgment, answer calls, help survivors consider their options, create safety plans, advocate through complicated systems, support children, connect families with resources, maintain welcoming spaces, and manage the many details that keep our organization moving.

Much of this work happens quietly. It requires more than compassion; it takes skill, sound judgment, patience, flexibility, and a deep commitment to treating every survivor with dignity.

To every member of the DAWN team: thank you for the expertise and care you bring to this work, for supporting one another through difficult days, and for continuing to show up for survivors and their families.

Most of DAWN’s impact cannot (and should not) be photographed.

Confidentiality is part of keeping survivors safe.

But survivors still need to see messages that say help is here, and our community needs to understand the change its support makes possible. Thoughtful design helps us bridge that gap. 💜

Canva helps our small nonprofit turn protected stories, essential service information, and impact data into messages people can see and act on without asking survivors to surrender their privacy.

At DAWN, change can look like a plan for what comes next, greater security at the front door, an immediate need met, and a room where a survivor no longer feels alone.

When “Colleen” needed help, safety wasn’t one thing. DAWN worked with her to create a personalized safety plan. We also helped provide a doorbell camera and diapers for her child. A support group gave her a place to connect with people who understood.

Your support helps make room for moments like this. 💜

Recently, a mom came to DAWN’s Advocacy Center with her children because she needed diapers and wipes. While they were there, one of her children looked up and asked if we had anything to eat.

A staff member found a few chocolate pastries and asked his mom if he could have one. The moment she said yes, his face lit up. He jumped in place, thanked her over and over, and after his first bite, threw his arms into the air and shouted, “I’M IN HEAVEN!”

Then he ran over and gave her the biggest hug.

His mom apologized, explaining that he was just really happy to be there. But there was nothing to apologize for.

Because of people like you, families who come to DAWN can find practical help, a warm welcome, and a place where children can simply be children even if only for a moment.

Supporting survivors starts with understanding. 💜

Through DAWN’s Domestic Violence Institute, professionals, volunteers, organizations, and community partners can learn how to recognize domestic violence, respond in trauma-informed ways, and connect survivors with meaningful support.

DAWN offers several training options:

💜 A free virtual, one-hour introduction to domestic violence
💜 Customizable two-hour training on domestic violence and supporting survivors
💜 A comprehensive 24-hour Domestic Violence Institute course that meets Washington State requirements

Trainings explore topics such as the dynamics and impacts of domestic violence, survivor-centered advocacy, available resources, practical support strategies, collaboration with law enforcement, and policy engagement.

Sessions may be available virtually, in person, and in Spanish, depending on the training selected.

Whether you work directly with survivors or simply want to be better prepared to support someone in your community, education can help turn concern into informed action.

Sometimes healing can begin with a paintbrush, a shared table, and a reason to step outside of isolation. 🎨💜

Recently, one DAWN shelter resident joined our Art to Heart support group with her daughter. She had been spending much of her time alone, and the group offered an opportunity to enjoy a change of scenery and connect with others in a warm, welcoming space.

Mother and daughter quickly became absorbed in creating together. What began as simply getting out of their room became meaningful time filled with color, laughter, and connection with each other and with the community around them.

Art to Heart gives survivors space to express themselves in their own way, connect without pressure, and experience moments of joy with their children. Because healing isn’t only about processing what happened. It can also look like making something beautiful, sharing a laugh, and remembering that you belong.
