Fraud Friday: How to Recognize Phishing Scams
Phishing scams are designed to trick you into giving away personal information like passwords, bank account numbers, or Social Security numbers. These scams often come through email or text messages that appear to be from a company you know and trust.
Be on the lookout for these common red flags:
• Messages claiming there is suspicious activity on your account
• Requests to confirm personal or financial information
• Emails about billing problems or account issues that urge you to act immediately
• Invoices for purchases you don't recognize
• Links asking you to make a payment or update payment information
• Messages offering government refunds, free prizes, or coupons that seem too good to be true
Scammers often copy company logos and branding to make their messages look legitimate. They may also use generic greetings like "Dear Customer" instead of your name.
Before clicking any links, take a moment to verify the message. If you think it may be legitimate, contact the company directly using a phone number or website you know is real. Never use the contact information or links provided in a suspicious email or text.
When in doubt, don't click. A few extra seconds could save you from identity theft or financial loss.
Stay alert, stay informed, and help protect yourself and your family from phishing scams.
