At 07:59 AM, the Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue Department received a report of a Fire Alarm at a meat processing facility in the 7600 block of 95th Street. Crews arrived on location at 08:03 AM.

Upon our arrival, the crews encountered a strong smell of Ammonia inside the facility with no other hazards noted.
With a leak present, the command requested a MABAS Box 56-50 to the working still level, instructing the Kenosha County Hazardous Materials Team and additional units to respond to the scene to evaluate the cause of the leak and determine if the building was safe for workers to enter.

A small leak was located. The area of concern was isolated from the remainder of the building and ventilated to create a safe atmosphere. The building was released to the company to resume operations at 09:05 AM.

No injuries or illnesses were reported during this incident. The leak was isolated to one room inside the building with no additional evacuations required.

The following departments assisted in the incident: Pleasant Prairie Police Department, Bristol Fire & Rescue, Paris Fire & Rescue, Somers Fire & Rescue, Newport Fire Protection District (IL), and Salem Lakes Fire Department.

Today the Kenosha County Hazmat Team was involved in a joint training exercise put on by the Kenosha Fire Department. The exercise involved a simulated leak of a hazardous material with a victim. The drill focused on the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies coming together to provide rapid and successful operations to mitigate a hazard and keep the public safe. This drill shows that these agencies can seamlessly provide services to keep the public safe. Thank you again to the Kenosha Fire Department for setting this up as well as the Kenosha Water Treatment Plant for the use of your facility. Job well done by all!

Today members of the Kenosha County Hazmat Team trained in different leak mitigation scenarios that may be found in industrial settings. The members learned how the different fittings could be repaired while wearing a Level A suit which greatly reduces dexterity and limits visibility. The Team is extremely grateful that one of our own members has the skills and abilities to build two similar training props for the Team to practice these skills.

This past week members of the Team as well as members from City of Racine Fire Department took part in a Cameo refresher class that was paid for by State HMEP grant money. The Cameo program allows the Teams to input information and plot a projected plum pattern in a chemical release situation. The software also allows for other information to be accessed which can be used in the mitigation of an incident.
