SITREP 20241018-2130

ALL things considered, electricity is now operational … so the fun begins. Almost 8 days without electricity changes things from routines, to sleeping patterns, to eating habits, to just everyday issues. It seems some changes are positive, some negative, & some unexpected. Roll with the punches & deal with issues as they crop up.

All the ‘stuff’ in both the fridge & freezer are trashed & gone. Total of almost 90 lbs. of food wasted, filled 2 ½ garbage bags. The question is, when will trash pick up resume that will dictate whether flies start to lay eggs. Hopefully sooner than later to avoid that issue.

Streets filled to overflowing with tree brush & household items tainted by the storm. Some roofs faired better than others – we escaped with some damage but nothing major … can’t say the same for the fence. All in all, we are on the fortunate end of the scale … a few friends lost everything they had, house included!

While we now have the ability to use stove/oven/microwave- now the challenge is fresh food to prep. Many have a long road ahead and many challenges to overcome.

SITREP 20241015-2000

First day back on base since things blew through. More of the same over there as here wind damage wise, some structures damaged, several roofs! Hangers have their issues. Tried to put most of the office back together today … what a PITA!

Another day without power. A full 7 days now -*BUT*- Lineman are getting closer sooooo maybe, just maybe the lights will return by tomorrow night. I know these lineman are working their ass off in a town they don’t live in. SALUTE! & Uh-Rah.

Sadly I don’t think my power bill will be any lower this month … even with an entire week of not accessing any … but that is where we are.

With work beginning to stabilize and my weekend projects have exploded off the charts, I won’t have any down time the rest of 2024 & probably into spring of 2025. LHM that just sucks pond water rocks. I guess maybe 2026 will be better!

All things considered, this SNAFU charlie foxtrot could have been worse. At least all the prior prep materials came in handy & useful. I’m glad I was able to obtain & accumulate all the materials I did, it proved accurate & useful.

Why jack wagons are shooting off fireworks is beyond me. I have half a notion to fire off a flare and light up the adjoining few blocks for about 4 minutes BUT the wife says it would be easy to figure out who did it & I’d probably p**s someone off, not to mention violate some cockamamy city ordinance… but if I did it would be fun in the moment!

SITREP 20241014-0730

Day 5 without power. Many things change in a day & many others stay the same. Days filled with continued damage assessment & cleanup, our own & neighbors as new issues are discovered. This hurricane brought a bunch of mayhem with it, recovering is going to take time.

MRE's will sustain you, BUT they are developed to give energy to 25 year old bodies doing massive amounts of physical labor under high threat. The exertion a 65 year old body puts out does not burn the calories up fast enough or as efficiently… and believe it or not you gain weight. That’s fun!

There is no routine to speak of, it’s more dealing with putting out fires as you go. Seems you are in a different world in so many ways. The boil water is still in effect, might be lifted by Tue or Wed. Most people are dealing with the aftermath in their own way, but they’re not nasty about it … you still run into the ‘I’m more important’ person on a daily basis sadly & they make things difficult for everyone!

I’ll be glad when this is over, but I have no idea what “reality” will be like.

SITREP 20241012-0945

Electricity still down. Have run through 9 dewalt batteries, 5 Milwaukee batteries, 6 Ryobi batteries & 2 Bosch batteries. The 2 panel solar (in bright sunlight) at least charge 1amp for cell phones. The frig/freezer data: freezer 36-48 hr max, fridge 24hr max. Power outage down to 1.2 mil from 4.6.il at peak so it takes TIME.

DEBRIS REMOVAL continues all over the place, cutting branches for the debris pile. That should be divided into several different types: brush/ fencing/ appliances/ household stuff – so the roads are lined with sorted debris as far as you can see.

FUEL difficult to get. Lines are long. FL Gov Desantis has opened up fuel points to obtain 10 gal of gas per household at no cost. Using candles & outdoor solar lights at night works.

Since the storm, at least the weather has moderated to cooler temps so most are not overheated at night. Everyone has windows open.

Basic foods & ice are at a premium. Cash works especially when power is out. Grill cooking with propane continues, although getting more propane looks challenging. Seeing issues with generators & safety – poor ventilation & over taxing the limits creating problems for many. Remembering how to figure watts/amps is lost to many. At night generators & wildlife are what you hear … kinda brings back Saudi.

Taking care of animals is difficult. Drinkable water & food for them is not easily on hand – still on boil water alert. Not to mention mental status issues, especially when your married to an animal lover – 2 dogs, 2 puppies, 4 cats, 2 birds & a fish.

In the end, documenting all this shot may not amount to much, but if it helps someone prepare for the next disaster, then I guess it’s ok.

SITREP 20241011-1915

Sun receding under the horizon, hear more crickets & wildlife than humans. The briefcase solar charger works during the day but that finished it's service a bit earlier today. Probably should have had second thoughts about letting go of various camping equipment & supplies, but I never counted on camping in my own house for multiple days … augh. Once the base reopens I'll venture over to special forces & see if I can obtain any older equipment. For now, work with what you have.

A few additional spots on the roof are suspect so that may add to some difficulties. Most likely have to replace a few sections of fence & a gate. Still under a water boil alert. Down to one propane tank now when the grill is used for more than a cookout.

Hanging in there otherwise. Making the best of a poor situation & hoping to avoid individuals who are already not dealing with things well … it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

SITREP 20241012-0600

Realizing the power issue is going to be awhile due to the extensive damage done by the winds to the transformer poles in back … not a quick fix -SO- at this point figure power is out until next week sometime. While this will be more challenging than originally anticipated, lock into deployment mindset & drive on.

Last night brought 2 coyotes roaming at the street level heading northbound – did not get a good or long enough look to ascertain whether both were males or a mf couple. Figure they were scouting for food & shelter … so that may add another challenge to the list.
Mental status is getting in a deployment groove, light naps & hypervigilance come with the territory- been a long time since I’ve dozed off locked & loaded in reach. The night time stillness & quiet breaks with any movement outside, noises now become alerts.

Teresa & the boys are hanging in there.
Hot meals will be by grill, refrigerated items are no longer salvageable with temps reaching over 70, same with freezer temps close behind now in the 60’s. Not looking forward to breaking into MRE’S @ OVER 3000 calories & constipation … I have a feeling weight control goes out the window. Dry foods, canned items are sufficient for the foreseeable future so the biggest challenge is fighting memories.

Figure today is more deep dive on the roof & damages to ascertain bottom line, will work from that point. Just focus & drive on.

SITREP 20241011-2245

LONG day today, now about 50 hours without power. The snapped transformer pole in back indicates it will be much more than a simple repair -SO- it could be another week to 10 days before flows back to the house. Cold showers are not my thing but the alternative is worse. That said, time will tell.

More debris removal tomorrow & a deep dive into the flat roof issue. While I may not get solutions I should get answers. Today noted the fence damage on the south side of the house once tree limbs were extracted… just added that to the list.

Not much else to update operations wise, just continuing to focus and take the next step.

Power restoration is going to be awhile!

Power restoration is going to be awhile!

10/11/2024

SITREP 20241011-1730

Power is still out, 45 hours running at this point. The effects wear on you. Data about power out & refrigerators: initial Freezer 4°,Refrigerator 39°; 12hr F 13°, R 44°; 24hr F 24°, R 50°; 36hr F 35°, R 55°; 40hr F43°, R 58°. Shows that a newer frig can hold reasonable temps (provided few openings) Freezer for 36 to 40 hours, Refrigerator 12 to 16 hours max.

Continued picking up debris & assessment of status & structure as things go. Real look at flat roof tomorrow to ascertain extent of damage. Have to wait until power returns to assess all appliance functions, the power shutdown could have surged energy at that time compromising the electronics.

Rest is at a premium, sleep will come when these major hurdles end & I can distress & breathe. Until then I’m still in deployment mode with no end in sight.

10/11/2024

SITREP 20241011-0730
Power still out, boil water warning still in effect. Sewage issues have abated & appear normal at this point. Continuing to assess structure for any latent issues while clearing more brush damage. Trees took a tremendous hit but stood tall in the face of winds over 90mph. Those trees did their duty.
Sleep is actually short naps … seems like a rewind back to desert storm, high stress, uncertainty, leery of actually falling asleep & on high alert constantly. I'm sure this to will pass eventually.
Grill cooking for hot meals, amazing to watch teenagers try to figure out how to cook on a grill, much less how to turn it on. Bizarre humor but funny none-the- less.
Outside temps in the low to mid 80’s. Most everyone is comfortable with that, I’m cold wearing sweats but that’s just me. No predicted rain thank God, the ground can’t absorb any more.
Sad destruction everywhere you look, won’t complain … many are in worse situations. Other than flat roof issue the structure appears to have withstood the elements. Unsure of the appliance status but won’t know that until power is restored…hoping for the best on that front.

10/11/2024

SITREP 20241010-1900
Electricity still down, sewer treatment plants back on line so facilities function, water pressure reasonable – under a boil water alert for at least a day or two.
Home structure is decent, moderate damage to rear flat roof & interior leaking into the Florida room. No water intrusion to house is a good thing considering over 17 inches of water fell in 6 hours. Ground is oversaturated right now. Massive tree damage all around the house, piles of debris … putting it in front of the vacant house next store. Maybe 10ft wide by 40ft long.
No physical injuries sustained unless you count sore muscles & a sever lack of 25 year old stamina & energy. Getting older sucks pond water rocks!
Will address more debris tomorrow ***poor & tasteless humor alert *** and then sit down & figure out how to s**t more gold coins to cover all the fun added expenses & pray ya don’t contract a raging case of hemorrhoids!
Sadly still concerned about jack-wagon looters roaming, especially since some neighbors left the area – WTF is wrong with some people. ANYWAY, we’re at 22 hours post hurricane landfall & other than tired will survive.
