National Park Service Volunteers-In-Parks appreciation post incoming! Recently, we have had the honor to host several out of state living history groups/individuals that continue to provide outstanding education and interpretation of or story.

Most every May, John Fritz travels all the way from Arizona to follow in the footsteps of his ancestor, Christopher Fritz of the 105th Illinois. In addition to traversing the path taken by the 105th during the Atlanta Campaign, John always takes time to spend a few days at Kennesaw Mountain. While here, he provides informal interpretation for visitors and helps with our school groups and field trip programs.

Just a few weeks ago, members of the 31st and 48th Alabama/79th Pennsylvania Infantry group came back for a weekend of programming and interpretation. In addition to doing a deep dive on the history of these regiments during the Atlanta Campaign, they also provided firing demonstrations and a stellar campsite impression.

Big thanks to our dedicated volunteers who share their time, knowledge, and expertise with us. The National Park Service runs on volunteer service and couldn’t hope to accomplish its mission without you!

It’s Saturday, wonderful visitors, and you know what that means… it’s time for our !

This picture comes to us from one of our rangers and captures a ghostly yet striking image taken during one of our famous artillery demonstrations. The smoke that you see in the picture comes from just half of the historic service charge of black powder for the 3 inch ordnance rifle fired by the park. This makes the reported accuracy of both U.S and Confederate artillery batteries during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain that much more impressive considering that they were 'line of sight' weapons.

Big thanks to volunteer Andy Cole and the rest of our cannon crew for making this cool picture possible.

As always, if you’ve got something you’d like to submit for our , send as a private message or drop it in the comments!

Well folks, it appears it’s time to have that chat again....

Tis the season for hot weather, bright sunshine, and…baby deer. As there is currently a shortage of good ‘Deer Daycares’ in the area, mother deer may drop their fawns off in the park while they run errands. Sometimes, this means busy areas like near the Visitor Center or trailheads.

Just a reminder, these deer ARE NOT abandoned and ARE NOT in danger. Please keep a safe distance and do NOT attempt to move or otherwise rescue the baby. Touching/handling the babies could injure them and moving them could prevent mom from finding them again. Also, this is yet another great reason to keep your pet leashed and under your control at all times!

Thank you for respecting our wildlife!

On this wonderful Saturday, we’d like to highlight yet another awesome !

Recently, long-time visitor Christian sent us an awesome picture of our favorite ‘eyes in the sky’. Red-tailed hawks are one of the most common birds of prey found at Kennesaw Mountain and can be seen in virtually every corner of the park. This guy is obviously doing a great job surveying his domain! Thanks, Christian!

If you have a great picture you’d like to see featured, don’t forget to private message us or drop it in the comments. Higher resolution is preferred for reposting. Also, if you have a great bird picture like Christian, send it over to [email protected] for a chance to win our photo contest! Winners get a FREE Kennesaw Mountain NBP annual pass and a chance to have their picture featured on the pass itself!

You did it! You’ve waded through another soggy work week and deserve a treat! This weekend, we are proud to present two days of in-depth living history and infantry demonstrations.

Both Saturday and Sunday, we will be hosting the 31st Alabama/79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Firing demonstrations will be on both days at 11,12, 2, and 3:00 pm, but their camp will be open to visitors throughout the weekend. Camp includes period correct lodgings, weapons, and equipment. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Recently, our own Ranger Jake was honored to work with the West Cobb Senior Center on their brand new 'Meet Up and Move Program' for active seniors. As we come to yet another Saturday, we highlight this week’s !

This week, we’d like to show a throwback picture taken by one of our rangers several years ago. On Memorial Day, our cannoneers always seek to honor the fallen with a moment of silence in between demonstrations. It’s also a reminder that while our living history demonstrations can be thrilling and informative, they also allow the rangers and volunteers to speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves. Thank you to all that come to visit the park and help us to honor the fallen.
