Happy 90th birthday to Sister Carmelita Centanni, M.S.C., Ph.D.! 🎉
A member of the Marianites of Holy Cross for more than 70 years, Sister Carmelita has dedicated her life to serving others with faith, compassion, and wisdom. Since 2014, she has faithfully served the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux as Victims’ Assistance Coordinator, a role she previously held in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. She retired last year.
Sister Carmelita began her ministry in education, teaching at Holy Name of Mary in Algiers, Hanson Memorial School in Franklin, and St. John’s in Plaquemine, before later assisting with campus ministry at Nicholls State University. With a desire to care for those most in need, she became a licensed clinical psychologist, bringing healing and hope to countless individuals.
A native of New Orleans, Sister Carmelita is a graduate of Holy Angels Academy and Our Lady of Holy Cross College. She earned a master’s degree in education from LSU in 1971 and another from Seattle University, and entered the Marianites in 1953.
For many years, Sister Carmelita has been a steady and grace-filled presence in our diocesan family. Through her ministry, she has helped shape generations of faith.
Sister Carmelita, we are so grateful for you!
