This cover photo, in Broad Cove, illustrates well why Newfoundlanders may keep calling these oh-so-characteristic "saltbox". Traditional saltbox houses, dating back to old England, have an asymmetrical gable roof, two stories in front and one story in back, with a continuous slope from peak to eaves. Not all, but certainly many Newfoundland biscuit box houses incorporate a lower enclosed "porch" on one side or the back; not so different from the more classical salt boxes.
