DNR focuses effort to remove derelict vessels in Jefferson County

PORT HADLOCK, Wash. —

Divers contracted by the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) spent Tuesday in the water near Port Hadlock working to remove sunken ships long abandoned by their owners.

Some 100 yards from shore they were after a 40-foot-ship wounded by a winter storm and left by its owner.

“We wish that we could remove all of these vessels out of every single situation because they are a hazard not only for human safety ... but for the environment as well,” said Troy Wood of DNR’s Derelict Vessel Removal Program.

Underwater, divers secure giant airbags to the sunken ship while a boat above slowly fills them will air. The ship, that likely sunk slowly, surfaces in seconds. It's a process they’ll repeat ship after ship for the rest of the week. They're on a mission to remove seven boats.

"We have 258 vessels on our vessels-of-concern list right now. That’s for all of Washington and that’s only the vessels that we know about,” Wood said.

The Department of Natural Resources is the state agency tasked with resurfacing and removing sunken ships as part of the states Derelict Vessel Program established in 2002. Since then, they’ve removed more than 1,000 boats with the taxpayer paying the vast majority of the bill.

“We just don’t have enough resources to get them all out once. And there’s new boats being added to the list everyday,” Wood said.

For everyday those ships stay under water the problem only gets worse. Not only is it more expensive to recover, but every day a vessel sits that's more contaminants released into the water.
Getting the boat to the surface is just the beginning. From there, it’s towed to shore, brought on land and in a best-case scenario parts of the ship are recycled.

Some 100 yards from shore on Tuesday crews began removing vessels submerged long ago.

What lies beneath on this ? Although the foundation for the 1930s West Sammamish River Bridge is older, the foundation is still massive with one pier weighing in at just over 157,000 pounds! It was expected to be only 124,000 pounds. One pier of four has been taken out, broken up and already hauled out as of Thursday.

In a joint effort with Orion Marine, AUS divers were able to safely salvage James Fitzgerald's "Waterfront Fountain" from the rubble of the Pier 58 collapse. Pier 58 located in downtown Seattle; WA better known as Waterfront Park collapsed on Sunday September 13th, 2020. The fountains history alone made this salvage stand out from the usual scope of work of either company. James Fitzgerald passed away in 1973 leaving one of his last sculptures unfinished until his wife took up the mantel and finished it in 1974

AUS was contracted to perform underwater video inspection on the remote island of Sheyma, AK. The inspection included but not limited to, remote operated vehicle inspection of the dock facility, sonar mapping of damage and debris fields. AUS mobilized a Seaeye Falcon ROV system, Kongsberg multibeam system, echo sounder and inflatable work boat to perform the service. The Falcon ROV provided spot cleaning and inspection of steel pile for thickness testing. A bathymetric survey was conducted on the approach channel, breakwater and dock mooring area. Weather windows were utilized in Sheyma to accomplish all tasks required for the deliverables of the inspection.

OUR HISTORY

Associated Underwater Services is the result of many talented employees and Kerry Donohue's long term experience in the underwater industry. Extensive experience throughout the Western United States and worldwide allows Associated Underwater Services to provide high quality diving and underwater construction services as needed.Through an affiliation with a Canadian firm, a satellite office was opened in Spokane under the name United Marine Divers. A well-known and publicized project successfully completed by the company during that time was the Roosevelt Dam Bypass & Lake Tap on Lake Roosevelt in Arizona. In 1990 the Canadian organizational structure changed bringing closure to United Marine Services. Subsequently Norwesco Marine was formed and incorporated in the state of Washington in 1992.In the latter part of 1993, a joint venture with the same Canadian firm was formed which encompassed projects within the Western United States. There was a great deal of new technology and expertise to be shared between the two entities. Kerry Donohue brought his worldwide experience to the J/V and was an integral part in the company's successful completion of numerous underwater construction projects.During 1995, another organizational change occurred and the joint venture was dissolved. Headquarters remained in Spokane and an aggressive business strategy was pursued which allowed them to conduct projects throughout the U.S. Noteworthy projects successfully completed during this period of time included the South Bay Ocean Outfall, San Diego, CA; the Lake Mead Intake System, Las Vegas, NV; and the Removable Spillway Weir, Lower Granite Dam, Columbia River. Also they worked on several important fish related projects in the Northwest including:Hungry Horse Dam Selective Withdrawal System, Ice Harbor Dam Fish Bypass System, Wanapum Dam Fish Bypass System, Rocky Reach Dam Fish Bypass System.

Associated Underwater Services was formed in 2002 by Kerry Donohue and headquarters remain in Spokane, Washington.
