Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) federal offices are currently furloughed and will remain so until the government reopens. During this period, our office phones are not operational.

However, please note that Soil and Water Conservation District offices remain open and fully operational. Cooperative Extension is unaffected by the shutdown and continues to serve our
community.

We appreciate your understanding and will provide updates as the situation develops. For any urgent inquiries, please visit our website or contact us via email.

Another progress update on the cleanout of the Northeast Cape Fear River. The crews have been hard at work despite the heavy rainfall and high water on the River causing delays. We have completed debris removal from the county line to the chinquapin boat landing, work on the next section, hwy 41 to Hallsville Road, is expected to start soon. progress has also been made on the River from the Sarecta Rd bridge towards the bridge at NC 903.
Cypress Creek from the River to Norwood Blanchard Road is also part of an ongoing effort to address debris in feeder creeks that run into the River. We expect these debris removal projects will help with flood mitigation for Duplin County.

A fantastic Thank you to all Duplin County farmers.

Yes, it's summer, and yes, it gets hot and humid, but the first big high heat and humidity week of the year can catch you off guard. Be safe, drink plenty of water, and stay cool, as heat indices are expected to reach 100-106° this week, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. Old, young, and pets are very susceptible to the heat impacts.

🔥 Wheat Field Fires & Agricultural Burns – What to Know 🌾

Over the coming weeks, you may notice large columns of smoke rising across Duplin County. Don't be alarmed — this is a common sight during this time of year as farmers begin controlled burns in harvested wheat fields. These agricultural burns help remove leftover crop residue, manage pests, and prepare the land for the next planting season.

These fires are intentionally set and carefully managed to reduce wildfire risk and support local agriculture. However, they can produce a lot of visible smoke — sometimes enough to cause concern.

📞 If you ever believe a fire appears to be out of control or spreading beyond its intended area, don’t hesitate — call 911 immediately. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

We appreciate your awareness and support of our agricultural community!

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER RISK UPGRADED ⚠️

The Storm Prediction Center has increased our risk level to a 3 out of 5 – Enhanced Risk for severe weather this evening. This means there is now a higher confidence in more widespread and potentially more intense storms impacting our area.

⏰ Timing: 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
🌬️ Primary Threat: Damaging wind gusts of 60+ MPH
🌧️ Secondary Threats: Hail and a low chance of an isolated, brief tornado

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to move west to east through the region this evening. With the upgraded risk, these storms are more likely to produce scattered wind damage and pose a greater hazard to outdoor items, trees, and power lines. For more information, please visit www.weather.gov/mhx.

🔔 Please take this risk seriously. Stay weather aware, charge your devices, and make sure you have multiple ways to receive alerts, including weather apps, NOAA Weather Radio, and local media.

📡 We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
