Key Safety Measures for Icy Roads

Stay Home: If travel is not essential, avoid driving to allow crews to clear roads.
Slow Down & Increase Distance: Speed limits are for ideal
conditions; on ice, reduce speed significantly and maintain at least three times the normal following distance.

Bridge & Overpass Warning: Bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas freeze first and are the most dangerous spots.

Handling Skids: If your vehicle slides, ease off the gas or brakes and steer in the direction of the skid.

Visibility & Vehicle Control: Use headlights, avoid cruise control, and gently accelerate/decelerate.

Emergency Supplies: Pack a blanket, water, flashlight, and phone charger in your car.

Pedestrian Safety: Watch for ice on sidewalks and walkways, as black ice can be invisible.

Thank you Justin and Aiden with Kemp Public Works. While working today in the ice, they noticed smoke coming from a barn off Elm Street. Both stopped and attempted to put it out but had to notify Kemp Fire Department because it had gotten too large. Due to their quick actions a much more dangerous situation was averted.

Honoring Officer Jacob Candanoza
End of Watch: December 8, 2024

Today, we pause to honor and remember Officer Jacob Candanoza.

Officer Candanoza served the Terrell community with dedication, courage, and compassion. Beyond his badge, he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a dedicated servant to the people he protected each day. His kindness, steady presence, and unwavering commitment to others continue to leave a lasting impact on our department and our city.

We remain grateful for the time we had with him and for the example he set as an officer, colleague, and friend.

To his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him β€” you remain in our thoughts. We will never forget his service, his sacrifice or the legacy he left behind.

GREAT JOB Henderson County Sherriffs Office! Recently a Facebook post was made about arrests in Henderson County. Just to clarify the post stated the arrests were in the city of Kemp at the 1300 block of Pritchett Lane. Although that area is commonly confused, it is actually in Henderson County in the city of Seven Points. The city of Kemp lies solely in Kaufman County but does have a 75143 zip code. That shows many areas incorrectly as the city of Kemp. We have recently been assisting Gun Barrell Police in Seven Points, but only as needed for back up on calls for service. Again, Great Job to Henderson County Sherriffs Office! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’―

Thank you very much to Kaufman County Sherriffs Detectives Landrum and Mattox. Recently Kemp Police Detectives Foisey and Iglesias were finishing up a burglary investigation and had 2 suspects in jail for the offense. Detectives Landrum and Mattox were interviewing the suspects for possible involvement in other county offenses and were able to recover stolen items taken in the burglary. We are very grateful for their help and joint cooperation even going as far as delivering the items to Kemp PD!

As we get so advanced in technology and our days are busy, I wanted to share this with our wonderful citizens of Kemp.

Recent Criminal Mischief in Kemp:
While often seen as a harmless childhood prank, "ding d**g ditching," or ringing a doorbell and fleeing, carries significant risks and potential consequences that parents and children should be aware of.
Potential dangers
β€’ Fear and Aggression: Homeowners may react with fear, anger, or even aggression, especially when the pranksters are unknown or if the act occurs late at night. Some homeowners, believing a home invasion is underway, have reacted with violence or weapons, leading to serious harm or death for those involved in the prank.
β€’ Legal Consequences: Even though ding d**g ditching is often considered a prank, it can be viewed as trespassing or harassment and lead to criminal charges. Some instances, such as repeated or forceful knocking or going onto private property with "no trespassing" signs, can escalate to charges like criminal trespass or disturbing the peace, carrying penalties like fines and even jail time.
β€’ Property Damage: In some instances, the prank can involve property damage, like broken doors or kicked-in doorframes, leading to further legal repercussions and potentially costly repairs for the homeowner.
β€’ Escalated Danger: The rise of online trends, such as the "door kick challenge" on social media platforms, has seen the prank escalate to more forceful and destructive acts, increasing the danger for both the pranksters and homeowners.
Parents and guardians we ask that you help us stop this recent trend by taking these actions:
β€’ Communicate with your children: Explain the serious risks and potential consequences of participating in ding d**g ditching or related activities.
β€’ Be aware of your children's activities: Monitor your children's whereabouts, especially during evening and nighttime hours.
β€’ Encourage safe and respectful fun: Discuss alternative and safer activities for making memories with friends.
If you're a victim
β€’ Remain calm: Avoid reacting in anger and do not attempt to escalate the situation.
β€’ If you feel unsafe, contact local authorities: Report suspicious activity to your local police department and follow their advice.
β€’ Take precautions: Consider installing security cameras or video doorbells to deter pranksters and gather evidence if necessary.
We recently had several reports of this occurring and have identified those juveniles and young adults involved. We ask if you are a victim please report this to Kemp Police at 903-498-8600.
