At approximately 9:58 a.m., Silver Valley Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire involving a detached garage in the 1100 block of East Fir Avenue in Osburn.
The first arriving firefighter and engine company encountered a fully involved garage fire with significant exposure concerns. The residence was located approximately two feet from the garage, and a neighboring shop structure was approximately five feet away and beginning to off-gas due to intense heat exposure. Crews also encountered a live electrical line in the roadway, which created additional hazards and complicated apparatus placement.
Additional resources, including a second engine and two ambulances staffed by a total crew of six personnel, arrived to assist with fire suppression efforts. Due to the intensity of the fire and heat, the fire extended into the eaves and attic space of the residence. Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the fire to the garage area, protect nearby structures, and conduct suppression operations from unaffected portions of the home to prevent further fire spread.
Off-duty and volunteer personnel also responded to assist during the incident. Significant support was provided by Mullan Volunteer Fire Department, Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, Osburn Police Department, and McGillivray Environmental. Their assistance and teamwork were invaluable throughout the operation.
The detached garage is considered a total loss. The residence sustained major damage to the living room and kitchen areas, while the bedrooms remained largely intact with only minor damage. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.
The Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office will be assisting with the investigation in accordance with SVFR policies and procedures and to support the homeowner through the process.
This incident highlights the importance of a rapid, coordinated response from all available on-duty personnel during significant emergencies. During suppression operations, crews were also dispatched to a separate medical emergency, requiring personnel to divide resources and continue serving the community simultaneously.
Incidents of this scale require cooperation, staffing support, and mutual aid partnerships to ensure both effective emergency response and firefighter safety. Silver Valley Fire Rescue currently staffs six on-duty personnel to serve the communities of Central Shoshone and East Kootenai Counties, including staffing two ambulances with four of those six responders. We were fortunate that no additional major incidents occurred during this fire, as concurrent emergencies could have significantly impacted available resources and potentially resulted in greater property loss.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, Osburn Police Department, Mullan Volunteer Fire Department, Avista, and McGillivray Environmental for their professionalism, partnership, and willingness to assist. We are grateful to serve alongside agencies that continue to support one another as one community family.
