Major Crash at Business Highway 67 and CR 317

The Keene Police Department is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at approximately 7:55 p.m. at the intersection of Business Highway 67 and CR 317.

Officers with the Keene Police Department, along with multiple assisting law enforcement agencies, fire personnel, and emergency medical responders, responded to the scene following reports of a two-vehicle traffic crash with injuries. Emergency crews provided medical assistance to those involved and secured the area while the investigation was conducted. One of the drivers, a 36-year-old male resident of Ft. The intersection remained closed for an extended period as officers documented the scene and worked to safely clear the roadway. The crash remains under investigation. Additional information, including the identities and conditions of those involved, may be released pending notification of family members and further investigation.

The Keene Police Department’s thoughts are with those involved in this tragic incident, and we would like to thank the assisting agencies and the public for their patience and cooperation during the roadway closure. Motorists are reminded to use caution when driving during adverse weather conditions and through emergency scenes.

During National Police Week, the Keene Police Department wants to recognize and show appreciation to the men and women in law enforcement who serve and protect each of our communities every day with courage, sacrifice, and dedication. This is a time we also remember and honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

National Police Week started as we had the honor to es**rt and be a part of Project HERO, an incredible organization dedicated to restoring hope, recovery, and resilience for disabled veterans and first responders through adaptive cycling and community support. Their mission continues to inspire and uplift healing heroes across our nation.

Thank you to all law enforcement officers, veterans, first responders, and organizations like Project HERO that continue to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

KEENE POLICE DEPARTMENT
Multi-Vehicle Hit-and-Run / Arrest Made

On April 28, 2026, at approximately 5:53 p.m., officers with the Keene Police Department responded to reports of a hit-and-run crash in the area of FM 2280. While officers were en route, dispatch received additional information that the suspect vehicle was continuing northbound and had struck multiple vehicles while attempting to flee the area.

Responding officers quickly located the suspect vehicle after it had left the roadway, crashed through a fence, and become disabled on private property in the 5200 block of Conveyor Drive.

The driver, identified as Howard Moody, 61, of Whitney, was taken into custody without further incident. During the arrest, officers recovered a loaded .45 caliber handgun from the suspect vehicle.
Moody was transported to the Johnson County Law Enforcement Center.

The preliminary investigation determined that Moody struck three separate vehicles, causing property damage, and failed to stop as required by law. Moody was charged with multiple offenses including Collision Involving Damage to a Vehicle and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.

Due to the severe weather that was also occurring in the area the investigation remains ongoing as officers continue reviewing witness statements and related circumstances leading up to the incident.
