Imagine answering your phone and hearing a family member's voice. They tell you they’ve been arrested, and they need you to send money immediately for them to be released from jail. You feel completely shocked, and you might immediately feel like you need to send them as much as they need.

But the voice that you’re hearing is completely fake! Cybercriminals find videos of your friends or family on social media and then use AI to make a replica of their voice. The scammers then use the cloned voice to call you. They hope that if you hear a familiar voice, you will not stop to verify what's actually happening. They usually ask you to send money using methods that are difficult to track, such as wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Anything you send them is nearly impossible to recover.

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to AI voice cloning scams:

• Set up a secret code word with close family members. Choose something that can't be found online and use it to verify each other's identity in emergencies.

• If someone you know calls you and claims to need money immediately, hang up and call them back directly using a known phone number to verify their story.

• Be mindful of receiving unusual instructions, such as being asked to send a large amount of money in an unusual way. If someone is in jail, it’s highly unlikely that they would ask for money to be sent using cryptocurrency!

The ribbon cutting for the Goose Pond Spillway Bridge was on Saturday (which was also National Trail Day). What an amazing community effort - thank you so much to everyone who came together to get this built! Keene Parks and Recreation

Keene Public Works will be hosting the first of many "Coffee and Hard Hats" meetings on Wednesday, June 10th, at 10:00 AM at the Transportation Center on Gilbo Ave. In attendance will be Public Works staff and George Downing, the project ombudsman. Next month, representatives from the construction contractor and the construction inspection firm will also be participating.

This informal monthly meetup gives downtown businesses and residents an important opportunity to learn specific plans and schedules for the month ahead, provide input, and ask questions.

Construction for Phase 1 (Central Square area) is planned to start mid-July, just a few weeks away, and last through November. The Coffee and Hard Hats meetings will provide ample time for Q&A and a brief overview of the project. We encourage downtown businesses and other stakeholders to attend, share questions and concerns, and stay in the loop.

Visit the Downtown Project Website (link: www.keenenh.gov/project/downtown) for project information. Public Works staff will also be providing project updates at monthly City Council MSFI Committee meetings on 4th Wednesday's at 6:00 PM in City Hall. These meetings are open to the public, and they are also streamed and recorded for viewing on YouTube (link: https://www.youtube.com/).

The City of Keene appreciates Keene Housing's Roosevelt East housing project, which supports our community’s ongoing efforts to expand housing opportunities for residents.

The City was proud to support this project by applying for and securing two grants that helped move the development forward. Partnerships like these are an important part of addressing local housing needs and creating more opportunities for people to live and work in Keene. The Roosevelt East project will add 30 affordable apartments through the redevelopment of the former Roosevelt School property.

We appreciate the collaboration and investment that helps advance shared community goals and look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have for current and future residents.
