🚨 Memorial Day Weekend marks the official start of summer, and one of the most dangerous times of year around water.
As pools, lakes, beaches, and boats fill up for the holiday weekend, drowning risks rise dramatically. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4 in the U.S., and one of the leading causes for older children as well.
Before heading to the water, remember:
đź’§ Designate a Water Watcher
🏊 Enroll children in swim lessons
🦺 Wear life jackets in open water
🚪 Use layers of protection like pool fences and alarms
📱 Stay distraction-free around water
Water safety starts before you dive in. Let’s make this Memorial Day Weekend a safe one.
The Jefferson County Health Department has Sanitarians inspecting your pools and beaches to ensure they have the materials necessary to keep you safe. Please report any concerns to us and don’t hesitate to call with any questions!
