Land Judging is a 4-H contest that teaches members how to evaluate land for its best agriculture use. Members learn how to texture soil, measure slope, and put all characteristics of the land together to determine what type of farming enterprise it is best suited for. If your 4-H member isn't afraid of getting dirty, they will love this contest!

We are currently recruiting members for a land judging team! Members should be currently enrolled in 4-H but should still be in high school. We will practice outside from 8:30 AM - 11 AM at various locations in Jefferson County this summer. The state contest will be held July 29 near Morgantown.

Email coach Emily Morrow at [email protected] for the practice itinerary and any questions.

Today, Jefferson County CEOS members attended their annual Achievement Luncheon! It was a wonderful time celebrating the accomplishments of 2025 and recognizing the many volunteer hours, community involvement, and close-knit friendships that make this organization so special.

Members enjoyed a delicious lunch followed by a special presentation from Independent Fire Chief Adam Watson, who shared important fire safety information with attendees.

Following the presentation, all five CEOS clubs highlighted their club achievements from the past year. Members also recognized Sharon Carrigan for earning 2nd Place in the State Short Story Competition, honored members who have passed through a touching memorial table display, and celebrated several dedicated 50-year CEOS members for their longtime commitment and service to the organization.

Together, CEOS members participate in motivating educational activities that encourage lifelong learning, community service, and fellowship.

Interested in joining CEOS? Contact your local WVU Extension office today and start making a difference in your community!

Thank you Heritage View Acres for hosting a Pasture Walk on their farm last night. We learned how to measure forage density and demo’ed different rotational gracing equipment.

Not only did our hosts open their farm for this program, they made all attendees dinner! 🍔

Thank you Silas Luttrell, 4-H member with the Country Clovers and Shooting Sports Clubs, for building this bee house as an addition to our native plant landscaping project.

Most native bees nest in the ground, but some nest in hollow stems and wood. These bee houses (or bee hotels) cater to those species by mimicking their natural habitat. The tubes are removable to clean out and allow the next occupants to find the space.

As our native plant garden flourishes, we are excited to see the pollinator activity!

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Jefferson County Schools, C.W. Shipley Elementary, and North Jefferson Elementary for allowing their second graders to visit the WVU Extension Jefferson County Office and the Kearneysville Research, Education, and Outreach Center.

Yesterday, we were thrilled to welcome 70 students, along with their teachers, support staff, and chaperones, for a day full of hands-on discovery on the farm. Students rotated through five interactive learning stations led by our incredible Berkeley-Jefferson County Master Gardener volunteers and WVU Extension faculty, including:
Emily Morrow (Jefferson County Agriculture & Natural Resources)
Ryan Snyder (Berkeley County Agriculture & Natural Resources)
Adriana Renner (Berkeley/Jefferson Family & Community Development)
Devon Thompson (4-H Youth Development)

Station Highlights:
Station 1: Students designed and tested their own trellises, learning how infrastructure supports successful orchards.
Station 2: A tasty favorite! Students sampled a variety of apples while learning about their nutritional benefits.
Station 3: Using engineering skills, students created protective mechanisms to prevent apples from bruising.
Station 4: Through storytelling, students explored the life cycle of an apple tree.
Station 5: Students discovered what seeds need to grow and created their own mini greenhouse effect.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and preparation from our office staff, WVU Extension faculty, and Master Gardener volunteers who made this experience possible.
Thank you again to our school partners for your continued collaboration—we look forward to welcoming even more students this fall!
