The Buffalo County City of Kearney Emergency Management page is not monitored 24/7 and is not for Emergency notification or response FOR MORE INFORMATION CLICK THE ABOUT TAB The Buffalo County Emergency Manager is an appointed position and is subject to the direction and control of the Buffalo County Board of Supervisors but is managed (day-to-day supervision) by the Buffalo County Sheriff and Kearney Chief of Police. The position of the Buffalo County Emergency Manager is defined by law but nevertheless encompasses a moral obligation to balance his/her duties authorized and required by law with the moral obligation of the public employee to do everything possible to protect and preserve the safety of citizens within his/her community. The incumbent is granted broad and extensive authority in determining program priorities and is responsible in determining the best way to support all local, state and national programs and objectives. The broad duties of this position include but not limited to the following:
• Articulate a strong commitment of interagency cooperation and work with all elected and appointed officials of all local, State and Federal governments
• Maintain and manage the Emergency Operation Center and/or the mobile response unit
• Provide coordination of all activities relating to the mitigation, prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery from disasters and/or emergencies
• Serve as the principal advisor to the Buffalo County Board of Supervisors in emergency incidents
• Manage, maintain, document, and appropriately utilize public and private resource

Highs today reach into the low-mid 70s, climbing into the 80s-near 90 for Thursday and Friday. Winds today turn more southerly with time, with speeds around 10-15 MPH.

An unsettled upper level pattern looks to keep periodic thunderstorm chances in the forecast through the rest of this week, mainly focusing on the evening and overnight hours. After a much warmer day on Monday with highs in the 80s to near 100, today is notably cooler, with highs in the 60s-near 70 for most locations. Highs in the 80s-90s return for Thursday-Friday.

An active upper level pattern will keep the potential for periodic disturbances to pass through the region through the end of this week. The main storm chances will largely favor the late afternoon on through evening and overnight. Looking at today, expecting gusty southerly winds to develop ahead of an approaching cold front. Later this afternoon into this evening, this front will provide a focus for storm development, some of which may be strong to severe. Large hail and damaging winds would be the main threats. This front ushers in a notably cooler day for Tuesday.

Plenty of clouds through the day will gradually erode later this afternoon and allow temperatures to reach the 80s in north central Kansas, but only hold in the 60s north of Interstate 80 in south central Nebraska. Rain chances increase later tonight and Monday, along with a sharp warmup on Monday. Highs on Monday could go deep into the 90s at some locations. Temperatures return to the cooler side Tuesday and Wednesday as rain chances increase.

Chances for showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast across the area this weekend, and continue on at least through the middle of the new work week. There will be the potential for storms later today into tonight to be strong to severe, large hail and damaging wind would be the main threats. After highs on Friday in the low 90s, today is cooler with 70s for most locations. Highs start the new week on a bit of a roller coaster, with 90s returning on Monday, then back into the 70s for Tuesday.
