Great Lakes Lighthouse Lovers

Great Lakes Lighthouse Lovers This is our adventures in trying to see all the Great Lakes Lighthouses.

Hi, we are Chris & Jenn, welcome to our page as we travel the lighthouses of the Great Lakes. Our hope is to encourage others to follow this journey and give some pointers along the way and maybe even get a few pointers from others too. It seems that there has been a few times where we really wish that we would have known things like accessibility to see the lighthouse before we traveled. We hope you enjoy our pictures and stories as we travel around the Great Lakes Lighthouses.

Guess who got a new toy? Jenn and I are camping at the Bay City State Park this weekend, and I took my drone out to the Saginaw River where the USS Edson is moored. I caught the Algoma Compass coming upriver. I can't wait until the next time we go up Sault Ste. Marie.

Next weekend we're talking about taking a little day trip to Tawas Point and doing some aerial shots of the lighthouse there.

Jenn and I are camping at the Soo -- it's been an emotional roller coaster trying to get everything in line to make it happen -- and I caught this sunset shot of the American Integrity downbound on the St. Mary's River last night near Rotary Park.

We've been off the radar for quite a while. Over the past couple of years, we've had a lot happen. My brother passed away in May of 2021 due to complications arising from covid. Jenn's parents went through a couple of cancer scares. I started a new job as a high school math teacher earlier this year. Jenn had weight-loss surgery back in November.

In the hope that we're finding our way back to more stable times, Jenn and I decided to run away to Marquette for a long weekend to ring in 2024. On Saturday, we took a drive along Lakeshore Drive and I saw the retired Lower Harbor Ore Dock and let my inner photography geek out to play for a little bit.

Here's hoping that we'll be able to get back to doing what we love more in the coming year!!

My son and I took a daytrip up to the Soo Locks on Friday for Engineers' Day. We got to see four ships - three freighters and a cruise liner - lock through downbound. The last of them, the CSL St. Laurent, we caught on our way down to Clyde's Drive-In, passing by Aune Osborn Campground. I did a little tweaking in Photoshop to bring out some of the colors, but the pic was certainly worth stopping for!

Over the weekend, Jenn and I kidnapped (or is it "parent-napped?") her mom and dad and took them on a road trip to the west side of Michigan. We visited lighthouses in Ludington, Manistee, and Frankfort. Afterward, we met up with some extended family in Cadillac for a picnic dinner!

We took a day trip down to Port Huron yesterday to celebrate our 5th anniversary. It was a beautiful day; we saw several freighters and got a picture of the Fort Gratiot lighthouse. We took them with our cell phones, but they still turned out okay.

Although Jenn and I haven't been traveling a lot, we have active in other areas of life. A couple of weeks ago, my band recorded a short video for a Relay for Life fundraising event to support the American Cancer Society.

Well it is not a lighthouse but I thought I would share it anyway.

Since we could have Christmas because of the illness I shall not name, we decided to do a Christmas themed family camp this weekend.

Herr is a pic of our trailers Christmas fun.
(I was the only one crazy enough to set up in the rain...lol)

So it's been a while since we've shared any updates with you, so it's high time we remedied that.

Jennifer and I are doing well for the most part. She has been having some medical struggles for the past few years with a condition called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH). It's basically a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid that mushrooms up into the brain, acting like a tumor. She came out of remission a few months ago, and we're dealing with that. Between this issue and the whole covid mess, we're really missing being able to travel.

Now, on to better developments!

Last summer, we downsized our travel trailer from a 24-foot bunkhouse to a 17-foot couple's coach that's 800 pounds lighter and easier to pull with our vehicle. We're planning to get passports so we can travel into Canada to visit some of the lighthouses there. We're hopeful that as the nation gains ground in the fight against covid and as Jenn's remission cycle comes back around, we'll be able to hit the road again!

We love the lighthouse posts some of you are sharing on the page, and we want to encourage you to keep on doing that. With all the dark stuff we're all dealing with, sharing and celebrating our love for the Great Lakes lighthouses and freighters is a welcome distraction!

Hey everyone, I'd like you to meet my son, Keneniah. He has an insatiable fascination with the freighters that sail on the Great Lakes. This picture was taken in 2014 when we visited the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. He's 20 now, and is still in love with the ships.

He's also gone with Jenn and me on a few of our lighthousing trips. He likes to call it "lighthouse hunting"

Be vewy, vewy quiet... we're hunting lighthouses.

Anyway, I have added him as an editor on the page to give him an outlet to share his love of the freighters. The kid knows more about them than I ever will!
