FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kaukauna — The Kaukauna Fire Department responded at 10:19 p.m. to a report of a residential structure fire at 1400 Sullivan Avenue in Kaukauna. Initial reports indicated smoke and flames were visible on the back side of the residence.

Upon arrival, Kaukauna Fire Department crews conducted a full scene assessment and found the rear deck of the home fully engulfed in flames. Fire had entered the residence through walk-out basement and main-floor windows and had extended into the attic through the eaves. Fire crews conducted an aggressive attack and had the fire under control within 20 minutes. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to conduct overhaul and ventilation operations.

No civilians or firefighters were injured. One resident was home at the time of the fire and safely evacuated. Damage to the building and its contents is estimated at approximately $200,000. The residence sustained extensive fire, heat, and smoke damage, resulting in one resident being displaced.

The Kaukauna Fire Department was assisted by the Combined Locks Fire Department, Kaukauna Police Department, Kaukauna Utilities, WE Energies, American Red Cross, and the Outagamie County VCR Team.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Kaukauna Fire Department reminds all residents to make sure their homes are equipped with working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors should be installed on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms when possible. Residents are encouraged to test their smoke detectors regularly and replace batteries as needed. A working smoke detector provides an early warning that can give you and your family valuable time to safely escape a fire.

A heartfelt thank you to the Kilgas family for donating their family memorabilia to the fire department! We are honored to display this helmet and badge, which we’ve confirmed date back to 1922, in our showcase for everyone to see.

The Kilgas family has deep roots in our community, with three of their family members having served in our fire department. While they weren't our founding members, their family’s dedication and contributions were instrumental in developing both this community and the fire department we have today. We are truly grateful for their history and continued support.

Girls can do anything the boys can do! Today, Brianna and Emily are showing us exactly what that means as they take care of our medic responsibilities on the paramedic unit.

This week, crews from Kaukauna Utilities, the Department of Public Works, and the Fire Department collaborated on a simulated trench rescue.

This exercise highlighted that our ability to identify, mobilize, and perform rapid rescues improves significantly when we work in unison. Teamwork and shared goals are critical when lives are on the line.

Thank you to everyone involved! We look forward to continuing our joint training to enhance safety and prevent future incidents.

Kaukauna — The Kaukauna Fire Department responded this evening at approximately 8:00 PM to report of a structure fire on the 100 block of Grant Street in Kaukauna. Initial reports indicated “lots of smoke coming from the first floor.” The Kaukauna Fire Department arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the front door and the entire home filled with smoke. A full scene assessment revealed the fire was located in the basement, and the resident had safely evacuated prior to our arrival. Fire crews were able to make their way to the basement and quickly knock down the fire. The fire was fully extinguished within 30 minutes of arrival. Crews remained on scene for an extended period ventilating the basement of smoke and gases.

No civilians or firefighters were hurt in the fire, but one resident was displaced. Damage to the building and its contents are estimated to be $100,000. Fire damage was confined to the basement, however, the first floor sustained significant smoke damage as well. The Kaukauna Fire Department was assisted by Little Chute Fire Department, Kaukauna Police Department, WE Energies, Kaukauna Utilities and the American Red Cross.

No cause has been determined at this time. The single occupant of the home was woken from their sleep by working smoke detectors. The Kaukauna Fire Department reminds everyone to install and maintain working smoke detectors in their homes. This incident serves as an important reminder that smoke detectors can provide critical early warning to save lives.
