Bird-A-Thon has officially begun!

For more than a century, birders have welcomed spring by heading into the field with one goal in mind: to find and identify as many bird species as possible in a single day. This tradition, called the Big Day, or Century Run, is a pursuit I look forward to every year, but it takes on new meaning when paired with raising money for the conservation of nature through a Bird-A-Thon. I hope you’ll support me in in raising funds for Bedford Audubon’s shrubland restoration. And good luck to all the Bird-A-Thon teams heading out into the field — may your day be full of great sightings!

Today is World Migratory Bird Day!

As millions of birds migrate this spring, YOU can protect them along their journey through simple actions at home and in your community.

You can help by:
* Turning off lights between 11pm and 6am to reduce nighttime disorientation for migrating birds
* Adding reflective tape, decals, or screens to the outside of windows to help prevent collisions
* Participating in community science programs to help track bird populations and migration patterns
* Planting native species to provide food, shelter, and habitat for migrating birds

Small actions can make a big difference for birds during migration!

Think you know your local woods? Birders, think again!

Join the Mianus River Gorge Preserve for “Bedford Field Notes: Forests” on May 7 at 5:30pm at Bedford Historical Hall — an evening dedicated to uncovering the hidden and ever-changing dynamics of the forests that shape Bedford’s landscape. Because the same woods where you might spot a Scarlet Tanager in the canopy, hear the steady “teacher-teacher-teacher” of an Ovenbird on the forest floor, or follow the song of a Louisiana Waterthrush along a shaded stream… are constantly changing.

From climate change to wildlife to stewardship, this talk will bring you beyond the trail to explore what’s really happening in the woods around us and how we can best care for them. Moderated by David Pogue and featuring forester and bestselling author Ethan Tapper and Mianus River Gorge’s Rod Christie.

Come see your birding spots in a whole new way!

Event includes bagels & coffee.

Saturday, April 18, 7:30am-9:30am. Cost: $30. Email Susan at [email protected] to receive the registration link

TONIGHT at the Katonah Village Library: the secret lives of fishers! Discover the elusive carnivores quietly roaming our local woodlands. Presented by Pace University students who have been studying these little-known, adorable, but fierce animals, you’ll not only learn fascinating facts about fishers, but you’ll also understand what their presence reveals about the health of our forests. It’s a rare chance to uncover the wild side of Westchester and the hidden predators living closer than you think. Don’t miss it!
