Bringing affordable, fast, and reliable broadband to Hawaiian home lands. We’re part of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

DHHL’s Broadband program works to ensure households and businesses on Hawaiian home lands have access to phone and internet services that are affordable, fast and reliable. We advocate on behalf of DHHL lessees and coordinate with telecommunications service providers. Additionally, we develop programs to help DHHL beneficiaries acquire the digital skills and tools necessary to utilize the internet for health care, jobs, education and other essential services.

Ho‘omaika‘i, Aislen! 🎉

Aislen Bacalso is taking on a new role with the DHHL Broadband Program as Broadband Coordination Assistant.

A 2020 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama and current Global MBA student at UH Mānoa, Aislen’s work at DHHL includes supporting telehealth programs and preparing for the distribution of laptops to charter schools across DHHL’s pae ‘āina, helping more keiki and ʻohana access the tools they need to learn, connect and thrive. In her role, she also supports grant compliance, program coordination and broadband initiatives that expand access to essential services and opportunities across Hawaiian Home Lands.

We’re excited to celebrate Aislen and her work supporting Native Hawaiian communities across the state.

The office is simply more fun with our interns around! Along with gaining hands-on experience and contributing to projects that help our community, they’re forming new friendships, discovering shared interests, and bringing new energy to the workplace.

For Riley, her internship is about more than gaining experience. It’s about contributing to work that feels personal and meaningful.

E komo mai, Riley! 👋 Born and raised in Wai‘anae, Riley recently graduated from the University of Hawaiʻi West O‘ahu.

By working with DHHL’s Broadband program, she’s learning about DHHL’s work beyond housing and how digital access can create more opportunities for Hawaiian Home Lands communities. She has also been supporting TBCP projects, including cultural and environmental clearances for a statewide library solar charging stations project. ☀️

“As someone who is part-Native Hawaiian, this internship feels really meaningful because I get to contribute to efforts that support Native Hawaiian communities,” Riley shared. “I’m also building skills in writing, grants and public service that I hope to use to help others in the future.”

For Rhianna, broadband is no longer just about getting online. It’s about the people and communities behind every connection. 💻

Say aloha to Rhianna, a second-year student at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa from ‘Ewa Beach. 🤙

Through an internship with DHHL’s Broadband program, Rhianna is seeing the planning, technical work and community outreach that go into expanding digital access. One of her most memorable experiences so far was visiting communities and speaking directly with residents about their internet service.

“Before this internship, broadband was just something I used but took for granted,” Rhianna shared. “After visiting communities and talking with residents, I realized how much connectivity can impact people’s lives.”

What does environmental policy have to do with broadband? For Brin, it’s all connected. 🌱

Originally from Kailua, Brin recently graduated from Dartmouth College, where she studied earth sciences and public policy. This fall, she will begin a master’s degree program in environmental health science and policy at George Washington University.

As an intern with DHHL’s Broadband program, Brin is learning how environmental compliance supports responsible infrastructure development and helps connect rural communities to technology resources and education. 🌎

“I came into this internship wanting to learn more about environmental compliance, but I’ve also seen how it connects to real communities,” Brin shared. “I’m gaining hands-on experience with research, planning and responsible development that I hope to carry into my future career.”

Curiosity, community and connection. Paris is ready to learn it all.

E komo mai, Paris! 👋 Originally from Mākaha, Paris is a third-year student at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa studying economics and Indigenous studies.

As an intern with DHHL’s Broadband program, she is getting a behind-the-scenes look at how broadband projects come together, from fiber infrastructure to efforts that expand digital access for Hawaiian Home Lands communities. For Paris, the work is a chance to learn more about the kuleana behind bringing broadband resources to homesteads. 💻

“This internship has introduced me to a field I didn’t know much about before,” Paris shared. “I’m seeing how much planning, teamwork and problem-solving go into bringing broadband resources to homesteads, and it’s helping me understand the kinds of skills needed in this work.”

The Hawaiian term for connectivity is Ka hiki ke ho‘opili pūnaewele aku.

The phrase reflects the ability to connect to a network, an important part of how people access information, services and opportunities in today’s digital world.

As broadband access continues to expand, connectivity helps ‘ohana across Hawaiian Home Lands stay connected to education, telehealth, work and one another.

The internet helps us stay connected to information, services and one another, but it’s important to stay alert when using email, text messages or websites.

Before tapping a link or sharing personal information, take a moment to check who it came from. If a message feels rushed, unfamiliar or too good to be true, it may be a scam.

When in doubt, ask someone you trust before responding. A few extra seconds can help keep you and your ʻohana safe online.
