Virgie LeMaire, a retired Assistant Chief of Kaplan Police Department, passed away over the weekend.

I spoke with one of her sons and Kaplan’s Police Chief. They shared about her time at the department and how much she loved her town and job.

I will be sharing more about her and her legacy at 5:00 on KATC-TV 3: Acadiana's Newschannel

City of Kaplan to Honor Former Assistant Police Chief Virgie LeMaire

The City of Kaplan mourns the loss of former Assistant Chief Virgie LeMaire, a devoted public servant who dedicated much of her career to protecting and supporting our community with courage, integrity, and kindness.

In recognition of her service and lasting impact, I am ordering all flags on city-owned property to be flown at half-staff for three days, beginning Monday, March 2, through Wednesday, March 4, 2026, to honor Virgie's legacy.

Officer LeMaire’s dedication touched countless lives, and her commitment to integrity and public safety will not be forgotten. The City extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were inspired by her service.

With a widespread hard freeze happening at night, here are some things to keep in mind regarding to dripping faucets. The main goal is to keep water moving through your pipes, which makes it harder to freeze. A drip is often sufficient, but if you do a stream, it should be no more than the width of a tip of a pencil. DON'T run every faucet in your house. If you can, choose one that's the farthest from where water enters your house.
Also -- once you and your family are up and moving, it's probably OK to stop the drip, even if temps are below freezing. Flushing toilets, running faucets, washing dishes, washing clothes...all of that day-to-day stuff is typically sufficient to prevent issues.
Most importantly, you need to understand your particular situation. Some homes are more exposed and more vulnerable than others.
Stay warm!
