It’s Direct Support Professional Recognition Week!

All week long, we’re celebrating our incredible PCBS Direct Support Professionals who work in our Day Habilitation program and residential homes, as well as the many DSPs working throughout Platte County and everywhere.

DSPs help make everyday life possible, but their work goes far beyond providing support. They encourage independence, honor individual choices, help people pursue their goals, create opportunities for connection, and support people in living full and meaningful lives in their communities.

This work requires patience, flexibility, creativity, humor, compassion, and a whole lot of heart. To our PCBS DSPs and DSPs everywhere: Thank you for the care you provide, the relationships you build, and the many ways you show up for people with developmental disabilities every day. We appreciate you!

Today we are celebrating Margy and wishing her a very happy retirement!

For more than a decade, Margy has served as PCBS’s Accounts Payable Manager and has been an important part of the work happening behind the scenes. When we asked her in 2024 what she loved most about working at PCBS, she said, “I love being part of an agency that does such important work for the community. Even though I don’t work directly with consumers, I get to witness daily the positive impact of my coworkers on the people that they serve.”

Margy, thank you for your years of dedication, your care for the work we do, and everything you have contributed to PCBS. We hope retirement brings you plenty of time with your children and grandchildren, a few great 80s rock concerts, and considerably less time spent processing our invoices.

Congratulations, Margy! You will be greatly missed.

What a wonderful evening last night at Red Barn Farm in Weston! Our annual Fall Picnic brought PCBS together for good food, beautiful weather, dancing, karaoke and so much laughter. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the night so special. We loved spending it with you!

Employment is an important part of planning for adulthood, and families do not have to navigate it alone.

Missouri Family Employment Awareness Training, or MOFEAT, is coming to Kansas City on October 2 and 3. This free training is open to Missouri families, transition-age students, young adults with disabilities, and the professionals who support them.

Participants will learn about:

• Outside-the-box employment possibilities
• Using transition services in the IEP to support employment
• Services and programs that can help individuals find and maintain employment
• Local, state, and federal employment resources
• Individuals with disabilities who are successfully employed in their communities

Each day will feature different topics and speakers, so participants are encouraged to attend both days.

What should the future of disability services look like in Platte County? We need your voice to help answer that question.

PCBS is inviting individuals with developmental disabilities, families, providers, educators, community partners, and others who care about our community to join us for Building the Future Together. These facilitated conversations will give you an opportunity to share what is working, what is missing, and what you believe PCBS should consider as we plan for the future.

Thursday, September 24, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
In person at PCBS or by Zoom

No preparation is needed. Just bring your experiences, ideas, and perspective.

We’ve updated our Parent & Caregiver Resource Guide!

And this update is an important one. Our guide now incorporates the Charting the LifeCourse framework, helping individuals and families think beyond “What services do I need?” and start with a bigger question:

“What do I want my life to look like?”

The updated guide walks through the six Life Domains, your support team, Community Support Partners, funding, ways to get connected, and resources to help you figure out what comes next.
Whether you’re just getting started or have been navigating developmental disability resources for years, this guide was designed to make things a little easier to understand and a lot less overwhelming.

What is ableism?

Ableism happens when people with disabilities are excluded, underestimated, treated unfairly, or assumed to be less capable because of their disability.

Sometimes it is obvious. Other times, it may look like:

• Speaking to someone’s support person instead of speaking directly to them
• Making decisions for a person without asking what they want
• Assuming someone cannot participate before offering accommodations
• Using language that treats disability as something negative
• Creating spaces, information, or activities that are not accessible

Challenging ableism begins with listening, including people in decisions that affect them, providing meaningful choices, and recognizing that everyone deserves to be respected and valued. Inclusion is more than inviting someone into the room. It means making sure they can participate, be heard, and belong.

The 2027 PCBS Contracted Service Provider Funding Application is now available.

Organizations seeking PCBS funding for programs and services benefiting Platte County residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities are invited to apply.

Completed applications and all required supporting documents must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Please review the instructions and required documentation carefully. Applications must include signatures from the organization’s Executive Director and Board President.

SomeBODY once told us… the PCBS boardroom makes a pretty great movie theater!

Friday’s Shrek Movie Night brought friends together for a movie, snacks, and some quality ogre time. Shrek even made a few appearances off-screen. Apparently, he’s very available for photos!

Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening happen. We love seeing our spaces filled with friends, fun, and a little foolishness. Let’s do it again sometime!
