The Literacy KC team is at the MAACCE Conference this week, connecting with adult education professionals from across Missouri and sharing the work happening in our community.

We're especially proud to celebrate:
• Netty Doyle on receiving a MAACCE award
• Wendy Kline for presenting to the full conference on the importance of advocacy in adult education
• Heather Mecham and Melinda Brown-Mason for sharing their expertise through conference presentations

Opportunities like MAACCE help us learn, collaborate, and continue strengthening the programs that support adult learners across Kansas City.

Congratulations to our team for representing Literacy KC so well!

Every number tells a story.

This year, nearly 1,700 adult learners have been served through Literacy KC. More than 1,300 students persisted in their educational journey, and 49 students reported gaining new jobs.

Behind those milestones are volunteers who show up each week to encourage, support, and believe in our students.

If you've been thinking about getting involved, now is the time. Volunteer tutor applications for the 2026–2027 school year are open.

Meet Heather Mecham, one of Literacy KC’s HiSET Instructors.

For the past 3.5 years, Heather has helped HiSET students work toward goals that can change the course of their lives.

What she loves most about teaching is getting to know her students, believing in them, and watching them succeed.

"My students remind me every day that what defines us isn't the choices we made in the past, but the choices we are making now."

Heather describes her classroom as a safe place. A place to learn, ask questions, make mistakes, and keep showing up. It's a place where students know they are supported every step of the way.

We're grateful for educators like Heather who help make Literacy KC a community where learners can grow with confidence.

We’re grateful to the Hunt Family Foundation for bringing together grant recipients at The Kansas City Chiefs practice facility this week.

Literacy KC CEO Gillian Helm and Board President Paul DeFoe had the opportunity to attend the event, connect with fellow community partners, meet Clark Hunt, and watch Chiefs practice.

Partnerships like these help make our work possible, and we’re thankful for the organizations that invest in creating brighter futures for adult learners across Kansas City.

Last week, students in our forklift certification program put their skills to the test during their driving assessment. Through dedication, hands-on training, and perseverance, these learners are building the skills and credentials that can lead to new career opportunities.

We’re proud of every student taking steps toward their goals and investing in their future.

Meet Sandy, Alan, Steve, and Larry, four of the more than 60 tutors who spent this school year helping students build skills, confidence, and momentum. Whether supporting math, English language learning, or individualized goals, their encouragement and consistency help create meaningful progress both inside and outside the classroom.

Tutors are a huge part of what makes this work possible, and we’re grateful for the time, care, and commitment they bring to our students and community every day.
