Future public servants in the making! 👷‍♂️🚛💧

This week, students from the Argentine Betterment Corporation Summer Youth Program, along with participants from Armourdale Renewal Association and Rosedale Development Association, visited Public Works to learn about career opportunities and the essential services that keep Wyandotte County moving.

Students toured Environmental Services, Streets, Fleet, Engineering, and Administration, getting a firsthand look at the people, equipment, and infrastructure that support our community every day.

Thank you to these outstanding young leaders for spending the day with us. We hope to see some of you wearing a Public Works badge in the future!

Mysterious green liquid? 👀💧

The green water in this CCTV inspection video is a non-toxic tracing dye used to help locate underground pipe failures.

This large corrugated metal stormwater pipe has significant deterioration, with portions of the bottom rusted away and collapsed. The dye helps our crews identify the extent of the damage and pinpoint failure locations from the surface.

Inspections like this are funded through your stormwater fees and are a key part of managing the community’s infrastructure. This pipe will be added to our asset management program and prioritized for future rehabilitation or replacement alongside other system needs.

It’s not the most glamorous work, but finding problems before they become sinkholes, flooding issues, or emergency repairs is exactly why we do it. 💧🚧

In the early 1960s, community leaders recognized declining water quality in our rivers and streams and made a bold decision to invest in wastewater infrastructure. Their goal was simple but important: protect the health of our community and protect the environment for future generations.

That vision led to the creation of the Water Pollution Control Department in 1961 and the opening of Plant No. 1 at Kaw Point in 1968.

Without those investments, Kansas City, Kansas would not look the way it does today. Sometimes it’s worth looking back and appreciating the leaders who chose to invest in the future. 💧

🏆 Kaw Point Wastewater Treatment Plant has once again earned NACWA Platinum Award recognition for permit compliance excellence.

Built in 1968, Kaw Point continues to perform at the highest levels of environmental compliance more than 55 years.

Kaw Point’s NACWA compliance journey began with a Silver Award in 2015, followed by four consecutive Gold Awards from 2016 through 2019, each recognizing a full year with no permit violations. In 2020, Kaw Point earned its first Platinum Award, a recognition reserved for facilities that achieve five consecutive years of 100% permit compliance.

Since then, the team has maintained that level of excellence, earning Platinum recognition for six consecutive years (2020–2025). Combined with its Gold Award years, Kaw Point has now achieved 10 consecutive years of NACWA award-winning permit compliance performance.

This achievement reflects the dedication, knowledge, and professionalism of the operators, maintenance staff, laboratory personnel, and support teams who keep this facility running 24/7/365 while protecting public health and the environment.

Congratulations to the entire Kaw Point team on this remarkable accomplishment. 💧🏆

Out of sight, but never out of mind. 💧

These photos show another major wastewater infrastructure upgrade completed by our Project Management team, including a brand-new manhole structure along with a new composite manhole lid and housing designed for long-term durability and safety.

Kansas City, Kansas has more than 40,000 manholes throughout the wastewater system, all requiring routine inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation, and eventual replacement as part of their infrastructure lifecycle. Collection crews routinely inspect these structures and rate their condition, while Asset Management maintains and tracks the complete inventory of system assets. Our Public Works Engineering team takes a data-driven approach to prioritizing repairs and replacements, with UG Purchasing supporting competitive procurement procedures and Project Management leading projects from planning through completion.

Depending on the size, safety considerations, quantity of repairs, workloads, and overall project needs, work may be completed by in-house crews or contracted out. Additional coordination also takes place with other underground utility providers to maximize repair opportunities and minimize impacts to the community whenever possible.

These upgrades are not only critical to maintaining uninterrupted wastewater service to hundreds of homes and businesses, they also help protect roads, neighborhoods, waterways, and public health every single day.

A portion of your monthly wastewater fees helps fund these underground community assets, including pipes, manholes, pump stations, and treatment infrastructure that most people never see, but rely on 24/7.

KCKES appreciated the opportunity to join the Rosedale Development Association neighborhood meeting and see the strong community pride helping move Rosedale forward. Residents discussed community policing, celebrated a recent litter cleanup, and shared ideas to continue improving the neighborhood together.

We appreciated the chance to discuss wastewater, stormwater, flood management, BPU bill savings tips, solid waste, and other Public Works services.

Special thanks to Sarah Oltvedt and everyone who continues to stay engaged and make a difference in the community. 💪

Your Stormwater Fee’s in Action 💧

Many people ask, “Where do our stormwater fees go?” Here’s a real example.

This stormwater infrastructure failure damaged the roadway at a busy intersection used by hundreds of people every day….including school traffic, residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles.

Across our community, there are thousands of stormwater assets working behind the scenes: pipes, culverts, inlets, channels, creek crossings, and drainage structures. Just like roads and bridges, these systems age, fail, and require ongoing maintenance, repairs, and full replacement after reaching the end of their service life.

Stormwater fees help fund the protection, repair, and replacement of these critical public assets that keep our community safe, accessible, and moving forward. 💧

We welcomed Steve Caspers from Kansas Department of Health and Environment to KCKES today for Industrial Pretreatment Program training in conjunction with our Environmental Compliance team.💧

Pretreatment programs help protect our wastewater system, treatment plants, and rivers by ensuring industries properly treat wastewater before discharging into the public system.

Appreciate KDHE sharing their knowledge with our team and industry partners today.
