Parents, please talk to your kids about mini bikes.

Mini bikes may look like harmless fun, but they can be extremely dangerous—especially for young and inexperienced riders. They are also not legal to operate on public streets, sidewalks, parks or trails in Kansas City, Kansas - same is true for ATVs/four-wheelers. Private property is the only place where you can ride any of these legally.

In July, our community experienced the devastating consequences when a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old were killed in a crash involving mini bikes. Two young lives lost—and two families forever changed.

Parents have a responsibility to help keep their children safe. That means setting clear boundaries, knowing what activities are legal and safe, and not allowing children to ride mini bikes where they are prohibited.

We also recognize that enforcement can be challenging. When riders choose to flee from officers, pursuing them can create an even greater danger to the rider, officers and other people on the road. Our officers must consider the safety of everyone involved while addressing these violations.

Help represent Wyandotte County in the new Governor’s Holiday Ornament Collection!

From seasoned artists and students to classrooms, organizations, and creative community members, everyone is invited to design an ornament that celebrates what makes up our community's history, culture, traditions, and spirit.

Winning ornaments will be displayed and recognized at the Kansas Association of Counties Annual Conference in December, and the full collection will be displayed on the State Holiday Tree in the Historic State Capitol.

‼️Storm Recovery Assistance Helpline ‼️️️

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) continues its coordinated response and recovery efforts following the severe storm that impacted Wyandotte County on August 18–19.

The UG continues to thank the many committed crews, community partners, and volunteers working to remove debris, restore homes, and connect affected residents with recovery resources.

Residents who still have storm-related needs are encouraged to contact the appropriate resource for assistance:

📞For tree removal or storm debris pickup, residents should call 311 or 913-573-5311 to report their needs.

📞For unmet home repair needs or other storm-related recovery assistance, residents can call or text the Storm Recovery Assistance Line at 785-207-1558. Language interpreting services are available. This hotline is answered by a representative from the Kansas Department of Emergency Management (KDEM), along with other trained staff or volunteers.

While significant progress has been made, recovery efforts are ongoing. The UG and its community partners remain committed to connecting affected households with the resources and support they need in the weeks and months ahead.

We appreciate residents’ patience and understanding as our community continues the work of recovering and rebuilding in the weeks and months ahead.

Public Works Citizens Academy participants will meet the people who maintain Kansas City, Kansas, streets, learn how street repairs get done, and see a pothole repair demonstration up close.

It’s one of several hands-on, behind-the-scenes experiences planned throughout the six-week academy.
