A retired special education teacher with 35 years in the classroom, Carolyn has spent 25 years as a cornerstone of the Shepherd’s Center of Greenbrier Valley — serving as board trustee, meal preparer, and the warm face at every special event. Her advocacy also includes co-leading a Jewish support group for inmates at a federal prison camp and volunteer ushering at Carnegie Hall.

Carolyn’s network, creativity, and inclusive spirit have shaped programming that empowers older adults across the Greenbrier Valley.

Since 2013, Leslie Aronovitz has been the most trusted guide for Medicare beneficiaries at the Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte. As a SHIIP volunteer, she’s met with hundreds of clients each year — in 2025 alone, 325 individuals left her office better informed and empowered.

During the most recent Open Enrollment period, her guidance helped 55 beneficiaries switch prescription drug plans, saving them a combined $106,834.

Before her volunteer career, Leslie testified before the U.S. Senate Governmental Affairs Committee in 1997 on Medicare fraud protection. Her commitment to accuracy and integrity hasn’t wavered since.

Ted Danson has a message about aging: embrace your age, stay curious, nurture relationships, keep evolving. Simple advice, but not just personal choices. They’re community outcomes.

It’s easier to stay curious when there’s a place to keep learning. Easier to nurture relationships when a ride or a gathering space makes connection possible. That’s the work Aging Forward Alliance affiliates have been doing for more than 50 years.

A ride is rarely just a ride. A class is rarely just a class. Each one opens a door to something bigger: independence, friendship, purpose, belonging.

People don’t age in isolation. Communities help determine what’s possible. 💜
