People often use “freed” and “exonerated” interchangeably, but they mean different things.

Someone may be freed from prison without being exonerated. They may be released because their sentence ends, their conviction is vacated without a final finding of innocence, they are released on probation or parole, or for another legal reason, while the conviction remains.

An exoneration means a person has been legally cleared of the crime they were convicted of.

For many wrongfully convicted people, getting out of prison is only the beginning. They may still be fighting to clear their name, restore their rights, access compensation, and have the legal system acknowledge what happened to them.

Freedom matters. So does justice.

Our brains are wired to notice information that supports what we already think.

It's called confirmation bias, and everyone experiences it.

That's why good investigations don't start with a conclusion.

They start with questions.

Following the evidence wherever it leads is one of the best ways to guard against bias.

Because the goal isn't to prove you're right.

It's to get it right.

What once seemed certain can change.

Science improves. Research advances. Better information helps us make better decisions.

The same is true in the criminal legal system.

As forensic science evolves, it's worth asking whether older cases featuring comparison disciplines like bitemarks, shoeprints, or hair microscopy should be re-examined.

That's one reason innocence organizations like MIP continue investigating convictions that are decades old.

Sometimes the evidence hasn't changed.

Ever find out someone left out the most important part of the story?

In a criminal trial, that can have life-changing consequences.

A Brady violation happens when the state fails to disclose important, favorable evidence to the defense.

That evidence might:
• support someone's innocence,
• challenge a witness's credibility,
• or raise questions about guilt or innocence.

The purpose of Brady is simple: a person accused of a crime has the right to a fair trial, and the defense must have access to important evidence before a verdict is reached.

When MIP reviews a wrongful conviction case, one of the questions we ask is:
