KC Center for Family Systems

KC Center for Family Systems Provides educational and training programs in Bowen Family Theory Theory provides a way of accounting for these differences in individuals and families.

Bowen family systems theory is a theory of human behavior and defines the family as an emotional unit. The theory holds the individual is part of a broader family relationship system with interdependent members. It describes how the process between individual members profoundly affects and ultimately guides individual functioning. The complicated system of exchanges between family members leads to

the family being a resource and/or to the development of symptoms. An understanding of and application of Bowen family systems theory principles, concepts, and ideas can lead to more effective options for managing life’s challenges in the family and workplace.

Dr. Kerr presents two clinical case studies to demonstrate Bowen Theory in practice, emphasizing key concepts such as emotional triangles, cutoff, and the importance of recognizing emotional patterns. He highlights cutoff as a particularly significant concept, not only in parent-child relationships but also among siblings. Kerr connects the rise in chronic anxiety and increased focus on children to broader cultural regression, noting how these societal shifts are mirrored within family systems. Both case studies illustrate how individuals can identify relational patterns, use self-awareness to improve their functioning, and apply Bowen Theory principles to navigate family challenges more effectively.
