This is the Shawnee Mission School District's Response to U.S. Department of Education's allegations.

The best thing any of us can do is contact the school boards and state your support.

Contact your Members of Congress, Sharice Davids-CD3, Derek Schmidt-CD-2, Senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran and demand that they tell US Department of Education to back off. All of this nonsense has been instigated by Defense of Freedom Institute- a right wing, homophobic and transphobic group that is anything BUT about freedom. And they have lots of money to do this type of bullying knowing that school districts have limited resources to waste on this kind of abuse. That's what it is, bullying and abusive behavior by right wing extremists.

The Defense of Freedom Institute is responsible for a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education regarding alleged violations of FERPA.

34 CFR Part 99 implementing section 444 of the General Education Provision Act (GEPA), which is commonly referred to as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Federal Register Notices of amendments to FERPA.

It should be noted the the Defense of Freedom Institute is a right wing, extremist organization whose goals are anything but supportive of ALL students, Parents, Educators and Constituents. Their policies are born of extremism, white Christian Nationalism and toxic, exclusive and intolerant conservatism.

FERPA-has very little to do with protecting Family Rights and Privacy.

This is information regarding the U.S. Department of Education's recent actions agains four of the largest public school districts in Kansas. As has been standard operating procedure by this dysfunctional, Fascist Federal Government. More government overreach and more persecution of the Q***r and Trans Community.

The affected districts are Kansas City Kansas (USD 500), Shawnee Mission (USD 512), Topeka (USD 501) and Olathe (USD 233).

Equality Kansas supports Kansas School Districts that continue to strive to protect the rights of students in their respective districts and well as parental, caretaker and educator rights.

Today, the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office determined that four Kansas school districts have policies that violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
