What You Make Possible: Food Security

At our main lodge, we have a fully operational commercial kitchen. This means that 365 days a year, 3 times a day, a hot meal is prepared for each of our participants. Food that is well-balanced, nutritious, and fuels their bodies and minds as they work towards a pathway to stable housing.

For many individuals' facing homelessness, food can be scarce. Often times, it is not clear when their next meal will be. Eating is not always a guarantee.

Thanks to our supporters, our participants can rest knowing that with us, there will always be a guaranteed meal. In our care, they will not go to bed hungry. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be hot and waiting for them.

We are saying "yes" to housing.

Under our upStart program, two new duplexes will now become a permanent home for families searching for a place that provides stability, safety, and opportunity.

Investing in projects like upStart means more than just housing; it means access to education, supporting health and wellness, building community, and ultimately ensuring that those around us are set up for success.

As we celebrate the implementation of more affordable housing units in Kansas City, we remain committed to continuing the momentum to invest in the families and individuals in our community.

On September 17th, hundreds of people who believe in a Kansas City where everyone has a safe place to call home will come together for reStart’s annual Homecoming Gala.

This year feels especially meaningful.

We recently opened the doors to our new Family Lodge, giving more families experiencing homelessness a place to stay together while they work toward permanent housing. Families have their own private space, along with the support and resources they need to take the next steps toward stability.

That is what we are raising money for at Homecoming.

Your $150 ticket isn’t simply a seat at an event. It helps make sure that when a family comes to reStart looking for help, we can say, "Come in. We have a place for you."

And while the mission is at the heart of the evening, we’re planning a pretty incredible night.

Whether you’ve supported reStart for years or are just getting to know our work, we would love to have you in the room with us.

Volunteer Spotlight: The Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Royals MLB Urban Youth Academy!

A special thank you to the Royals and the Urban Youth Academy for creating a day for our families that they will never forget! By curating a special event that allowed our kids to practice catching, batting, and many more baseball skills, the day was filled with fun and laughter. Their special guest, Slugger, also made an appearance!

Days like this mean more than just a field day; they bring joy, community, and excitement. It gives our families something to look forward to as they are continuously working to get one step closer to housing.

They also brought in bags of school supplies to make sure that all the kids that were in attendance would be ready for the school year.

We are so appreciative to the Royals and the Urban Youth Academy for showing up for our families in so many ways. Thank you for hosting such a great day, and for ensuring that our Family Lodge environment really started off on a high note! More than 40 years ago, Diane needed reStart.

Today, she donates to make sure someone else has it, too. 💙

Diane stayed at reStart in the 1980s while she worked to get back on her feet. She remembers reStart as a place that gave her the space to heal, grow and begin again.

Then, all these years later, this handwritten note arrived with her support:

“I was a reStart resident in the 80s. Thank you for your help and continuation with others!”

Story 21 of 45: "If it weren't for reStart, my son would not have made it." This mother's story is a reminder that homelessness doesn't discriminate.

Homelessness affects people who are deeply loved. People with parents who never stopped answering the phone. People with families who never stopped hoping. People whose lives changed because of circumstances that spiraled beyond anyone's control.

Her son is a veteran. He returned home from Iraq, struggled with chronic pain after back surgery, lost his job, and began self-medicating.

Ten years later, she still credits reStart with helping save her son's life.

Stable housing creates the space for healing, recovery, and a second chance. And sometimes, it helps a family find their way back to one another.
