Anyone who’s been in an abusive relationship before can recognize these tactics. The “if onlys” — the broken promises for relief from pain.

If Trump could truly offer relief to American families suffering the financial burden of his failed policies, he would’ve done so already.

But that also would mean admitting he was wrong about something.

At his party’s Dallas convention, Trump promised every adult American citizen a $5,000 “dividend” if Republicans retain both the House and Senate in November.

He delivered the condition plainly: “If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000.”

Distributing $5,000 to roughly 245 million adults would cost more than $1.2 trillion. Congress would have to authorize the payments. His earlier proposals for tariff and DOGE dividends never produced checks.

The promise arrives while households continue struggling with prices for groceries, housing, energy and healthcare. Including hundreds of dollars more in added gasoline costs since the Iran war began.

A president with $1.2 trillion to hand out could lower a gas bill tomorrow.

This one is holding the money over your head and naming the terms: love him back first, then maybe.

The pain is the point, and the check is the leverage.

He's not offering relief.
He's offering conditions.
He’s offering them to the same people he’s hurting, in exchange for their loyalty.

That’s abuse, if we ever saw it.
