Limestone Township Fire Protection District Responds to Building Fire

Limestone Township, IL — April 17, 2026

At 7:32 p.m. on April 17, 2026, the Limestone Township Fire Protection District and Automatic Aid Companies responded to a reported building fire at 4345 W 1500 North Rd, Kankakee.

Upon arrival at 7:38 pm, crews encountered a 30-by-50-foot storage shed with smoke showing. Firefighters conducted an investigation and located a skid steer actively burning inside the structure. Crews quickly initiated fire suppression operations, successfully containing the fire to the skid steer and a small portion of the building. Crews remained on scene for approx. 1 hour.

Estimated damage from the incident is approximately $40,000. No injuries were reported.

The Limestone Township Fire Protection District was assisted on scene by Automatic-Aid Companies including Kankakee Fire Department, Bradley Fire Department, Bourbonnais Fire Protection District, Salina Fire Protection District, Herscher Fire Protection District, Braidwood Fire Protection District, and Riverside Ambulance.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

After last night’s storms, all permits and contractor registrations will be processed expeditiously.

Kankakee County and Village of Limestone officials are cautioning area residents to be skeptical when approached by unsolicited contractors requesting to repair damaged caused by this storm.

“Unfortunately, there are some that take advantage of the vulnerable, which includes desperate homeowners dealing with crisis due to weather-related damage,” said Kankakee County Board Chairman Matt Alexander-Hildebrand. “We encourage anyone that feels a bit uneasy or concerned to contact the appropriate authorities to verify the validity of the contractor and to ensure they are licensed to work in the area.”
