See you today at the Hale! Join us for Hale Eats, our food truck fundraiser for Aloha United Way! The event goes from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. (or until vendors sell out). In total, we have ten local vendors, with food selections ranging from burgers to ice cream cones to lemonade to poke. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Aloha United Way. This food truck event is part of the City’s annual fundraiser for Aloha United Way. The event is open to the public and everyone is invited!

Food trucks are coming to the Hale! Join us for Hale Eats on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the driveway of Honolulu Hale! There will be a bunch of local vendors featuring a variety of fantastic food, delicious dishes, and tasty treats. The event starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. or when sold out. This event will help benefit Aloha United Way, which connects individuals with the resources they need, raises funds for local nonprofits, and has been helping to build a healthier, stronger, and more equitable Hawaiʻi for the last century!

G.R.O.W. GROWS

Starting Oct. 1, residents across Oʻahu will be allowed to throw food scraps in their green compost carts along with green waste.

This is an expansion of the recent 6-month G.R.O.W. pilot program which 30k households in Mililani, Hawaiʻi Kai, Nānākuli, Kailua, Waipahu, and Kalihi participated.

Instead of being incinerated at the H-Power Plant, or being piled at the landfill, food scraps are converted to compost by Hawaiian Earth Recycling.

From food waste collected through the program, about 14k cubic yards of locally produced compost, valued at more than $1M, was produced.

ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS:
· Fruits
· Vegetables
· Meat, fish, and bones
· Coffee grounds
· Eggs and eggshells
· Rice, bread
· Leftovers/spoiled foods
· If it GROWS, it goes

DO NOT INCLUDE:

· Plastic bags or plastic of any kind
· Packaging or wrappers
· Compostable or biodegradable bags, plates, utensils
· Glass or metal
· Liquids, oils, grease
· Pet waste
· Household trash or hazardous materials

FOOD GOES IN LOOSE

Food must be put in the green compost cart loose; no bags allowed

HOW TO REDUCE ODOR & MESSY CARTS:

· Keep food waste in a bag or container in the freezer until the night before the scheduled green cart pickup
· Make sure there is green waste in the cart & bury the food waste in the green waste
· Keep the green cart lid closed
· Sprinkling baking soda or coffee grounds helps reduce odors

24/7 ROAD CLOSURE

Starting October 12, a section of Magellan Avenue will be closed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency repairs to an underground drainage line.

The project is expected to take about 4 months to complete with the closure running from Miller Street to Alapa‘i Street.

Work will include installing temporary erosion and sediment control, removing trees and vegetation, excavating, replacing guardrails, traffic control, restoring grass, and road restoration.

Local traffic will be allowed to through the area to access their properties; TheBus will be allowed to travel through the area as well, Route 122 will operate normally.

The contractor, JBC Engineering & Construction, LLC, will coordinate and manage traffic for businesses and residents, including deliveries, trash collection, and emergency services

Parking in front of Dole Community Park will be prohibited for the duration of the project as the area is used to stage materials and equipment.

The upcoming work will cause some dust and noise in the surrounding area. The contractor will use appropriate measures to limit construction debris and other nuisances.

HONORING HAWAIʻI ATHLETES

A new legacy installation is now standing tall in Central Oʻahu, honoring 19 sports legends of Waipahu.

The memorial sign was unveiled Sept. 25 at Hans L’Orange Baseball Park replacing a previous sign that was damaged beyond repair by years of exposure to the elements.

The new 6-foot tall sign is made of aluminum and acrylic, making it more durable to withstand harsh weather conditions.

The memorial honors Hans L’Orange, Fred Yasui, Johnny Yasui, Eddie Yasui, Chester Yasui, Andy Ganigan, Al Silva, Henry “Prince” Oana, Kenneth Kimura, Richard Oamilda, Crispin Mancao, Katsuji Kojima, Mitsuru “Brown” Watabu, Walter Gouveia Sr., Masa Yonamine, James Moniz, Takemi Arakawa, Dr. Richard Noda, and Mac Flores.

In addition to family and friends honoring their legendary ancestors, also in attendance was sole-living honoree, baseball standout Kenneth Kimura.

Mahalo to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and resources to revive this legacy installation, including those from the Commission on Culture and the Arts, DDC, DPR, MOCA, and the countless community members who provided support throughout the project.

This popular park also saw extensive upgrades in September 2024, including $4.2 million worth of parking lot, bathroom, ball field, lighting, drainage, irrigation, landscaping and baseball facility improvements.

Strong and gusty trade winds are expected across Oʻahu as Hurricane Nolo passes south of the islands.

Wind Advisory in effect from 6am Saturday to 6pm Sunday.

Winds are expected to reach 20–25 mph, with gusts up to 50mph possible. Conditions are expected to become windier through the weekend.

Actions to take now:
• Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, trash cans, decorations and other loose items that could become flying debris.
• Prepare for possible power outages by charging phones and other essential devices and making sure flashlights are ready.
• Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, especially near trees, utility lines and other areas where branches or debris could fall.
• Use extra caution while driving, particularly in exposed and wind-prone areas.
• Check your emergency kit and make sure you have food, water, medications and other essential supplies for 14+ days.

NEW EMS STATION

A groundbreaking ceremony and traditional Hawaiian blessing kicked off the construction project for a brand new EMS station in Kahuku.

The new $5.3M, 3,000 sq. ft. facility will replace the 900 sq. ft. EMS station on Kamehameha Highway that currently serves the North Shore.

Demolition of the existing station is slated to begin November 2026; completion of the new station is scheduled for December 2027.

To ensure no lapse in services during construction, EMS crews will operate out of the Honolulu Police Department’s Kahuku substation.

As of 8 a.m. Sept. 24, Tropical Storm Nolo was about 455 miles south of Honolulu.

The forecast track shows the strongest winds and heaviest rains passing south of Oʻahu.

Currently, there are no watches, warnings, or advisories in place for Oʻahu but the Big Island is under both a Hurricane and Flood Watch; Maui is also under a Flood Watch.

The strongest winds are expected between noon and midnight Saturday; the most likely impacts for Oʻahu are high surf and gusty winds.
