*This post has been edited to correct an inaccuracy in the previous version stating that the Village of Kalkaska ended the employment of Aaron Popa. The Village Council has only passed a preliminary resolution for his removal as Village Manager, Chief of Police and all affiliated positions.

The Village of Kalkaska’s Village Council announced on September 14, 2026, that it passed a preliminary resolution to remove Aaron Popa as Village Manager and Chief of Police. "Matters like this are never easy, especially in a, tightknit community; but they are sometimes necessary", says Kalkaska Village Council President Jeff Sieting. "It was made and, after reviewing the broader circumstances, we determined this change in leadership is in the best interest of the community."

Popa was suspended with pay Aug. 18, 2026 following an Aug. 17 incident. Sieting said Council's decision is separate from both that incident and the Michigan State Police investigation into it. The Village will not comment on the pending investigation nor respond to questions that could interfere with that process. Questions about the investigation should be directed to the Michigan State Police.

"Public safety remains our top priority", said Sieting. We continue to provide professional, accountable services to our village and are grateful for the commitment of our officers and our team during this transition".

Residents should continue to call 911 for emergencies and (231) 258-3350 for non-emergency police assistance. Sieting can be reached for commentary consistent with what's contained in this release but will not share additional detail on personnel matters.

Over the past few weeks this summer, Village facilities as well as some private businesses have suffered various levels of vandalism and damage. Chief Popa has implemented specific patrols and investigative efforts focused on bringing those responsible to be accountable for their actions. Officers with the Village, along with partners from the Sheriff’s Office and State Police, have identified several individuals responsible for damage to Village property as well as private property. To date, multiple individuals will be facing civil and/or criminal consequences. Additionally, community service projects will be staffed by individuals found responsible in the coming weeks.

Chief Popa has a reminder for Village residents and visitors: “If you see something, say something. If you know of individuals damaging our community, please let us know – it can even be anonymous. I will ensure our officers follow up on these reports to ensure a safe and enjoyable community for all Village residents”.
