To celebrate National Voter Registration Day, K Votes will be hosting a voter registration drive in front of Hicks Student Center from 3:30-6 p.m., Tuesday, September 15th. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held inside Hicks Student Center. Please stop by and register to vote for the upcoming election or check your registration status.

A huge THANK YOU to CAPS Alum and K. Central class of 2010 graduate, Kyle Owens for making time to support us as we continue prep for our 20th Anniversary celebration. To think, it has been nearly seventeen years since Kyle finished his K-12 education and went on to college. Now a college graduate, a father of two and a business man, he still considers CAPS a major part of his success journey. Thanks to Kyle and his father, Craig Owens, who currently serves as the board treasurer for being a part of our twenty year journey.

Dan works remotely as a software engineer and has a wife and two teenage sons. He was a long-distance runner (on the Kalamazoo College cross country team), but his frequent injuries led him to develop a love for cycling and eventually racing. Dan rode for the Bissell-ABG elite team for 7 years and competed in many races across the country. He has dealt with many injuries, including two broken hips, multiple broken collarbones, ribs, and a broken ankle. These injuries ultimately led him to stop racing and he now rides for fun on Team Eclipse on Tap with many of his ex-Bissell teammates. He wants car advertisements to stop using phrases like "own the road" and glorifying cars going at fast speeds. Dan wants drivers to change the way they perceive cyclists on the road - not as obstacles, but as fellow human beings. If you see someone like Dan riding on the roads, slow down and give him at least 5 feet of space to let him make it home safely.

Tadej is a high school student who rides competitively as well as for transportation. He likes to stay active because it helps him clear his mind and relieve daily stress. When he’s not riding or running, Tadej enjoys playing cards with his grandmother, playing the guitar, and hanging out with his friends. He dreams of becoming a professional cyclist when he gets older and loves to race. While a race course closed to traffic is his favorite place to ride, when he rides in the city, he feels most comfortable and safe on bike lanes that are separated from cars by a physical barrier. If you see someone like Tadej riding his bike, slow down and share the road to keep them safe.

The Community Building Internships have been ongoing since June, with twenty-eight interns placed with community partners! Recently, the cohort gathered for a dinner, reflection, and discussion about the final project that wraps it all up. We love seeing our partners join these dinners, and for the dinner pictured, we were gladly hosted at the Kalamazoo Douglass Community Association in the Northside! We are immensely grateful for and proud of the partnership between Community Advocates for Parents and Students and Kalamazoo College through the Center for Civic Engagement that has been built over the last twenty years. We owe a sincere thank you to all of the community and CAPS Board members, families, CAPS Scholar graduates, and K College student tutors who built this community around the mutual mission to support young students academic success and access to the Kalamazoo Promise. Congratulations on twenty years, here's to many, many more!
