Legislation passed and signed into law in 2023 allows eligible 16- and 17-year-old Michigan residents to preregister to vote. Teens who complete a qualifying transaction at a branch office – like getting a driver’s license or state ID – are automatically preregistered to vote at the time of the transaction. Just as with automatic voter registration, only U.S. citizens qualify for automatic voter preregistration.

By law, our state allows eligible Michiganders who are between the ages of 16 and 17 to preregister to vote: go.mi.gov/iuhfk3307

This means that once they are 18, they will be prepared to cast their ballot immediately.

in 1974, First Lady Betty Ford gave her first official White House press conference in the State Dining Room.

“Well, I can remember well there was a time when we couldn’t even vote.”

Betty Ford told reporters at the press conference that she directed this rebuttal at her husband when he questioned why she supported equal rights and opportunities for women. She later fielded a question about whether she would be supporting the Equal Rights Amendment. Yes, she replied.

Mrs. Ford felt that the ERA would ultimately help “end the laws and remove the labels that limit the imaginations and the options of men and women alike.” As someone who had pursued an independent career and also been a stay-at-home wife and mother, she also believed she could speak to how it would benefit women in both circumstances. She felt very strongly that homemaking was a profession deserving equal respect and rights just the same as working outside the home.

“I’m in favor of the Equal Rights Amendment not only for equal pay for equal work, but because I feel every woman should have the right to decide the direction of her life,” she told the participants at the Homemaking and Identity Conference in September 1975. “Whether a woman chooses a career in the home or outside the home, what is important is that she makes that decision herself – without any pressures to restrict her choice.”
