🚔 WEEK ONE — 102ND POLICE ACADEMY 🚔

Week One is officially in the books, and the foundation has been laid.

Our recruits started this journey learning that becoming a police officer is about far more than passing tests or mastering skills. It is about teamwork, discipline, physical and mental readiness, accountability, and service.

This week included:
💪 Physical Training
🤝 Team Building
🧠 Health & Wellness
⚖️ The beginnings of Law & Legal Procedure
👮 Learning what it means to function as one team with one mission

But we ended Week One with something far more important than training.

Today marks five years since Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Proxmire made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our recruits concluded their first week by honoring a fallen brother and reflecting on the responsibility that comes with the badge they are working so hard to earn.

As these recruits begin their journey into law enforcement, we want them to understand from the very beginning that they are joining something much larger than themselves — a profession built upon service, sacrifice, courage, and remembrance.

We remember Deputy Proxmire.
We honor his service.
We honor his sacrifice.
And we will continue to say his name and carry his legacy forward.

In remembrance of Officer Beyerstedt, one of our academy graduates who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Mattawan Police Department

Today marks 21 years since 21-year-old Mattawan (Michigan) Police Officer Scot Beyerstedt lost his life in the line of duty. Scot was seriously injured in a crash during a pursuit of a fleeing felon the evening before, and he was kept on life support until the following day to carry out his final selfless act in service of others, donating his organs. Scot was a coworker of mine, and I have stayed connected with his family, calling them each year on this date to let them know that he has not been forgotten. Thank you for your service, Scot, and may you rest in peace, my brother.

I wrote this a few years after Scot was killed. It sums it up for me here, and with every LODD funeral that I have attended before or since.

The service guide soaks my tears; another cop is down. Cut too short were his years; I bow my head and frown. Why was this for one who served; I guess I’ll never know. So now support we give his kin before we let them go. He did not give his life in vain; he lived it value plus. His family now is our concern, as he was one of us.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💙🇺🇸🫡
