DAMAGE ASSEMENTS BEGIN: Preliminary damage assessments will begin tomorrow across 30 counties impacted by March’s severe weather. Teams from MSP/EMHSD, FEMA, and the U.S. Small Business Administration may be in your community evaluating the extent, severity, and impact of recent flooding and tornado damage.

The information gathered during these assessments helps determine whether the state meets the criteria to request a federal disaster declaration and FEMA Individual Assistance for affected residents.

The City of Kalamazoo is currently experiencing numerous downed trees and power lines throughout the community following recent high wind gusts.

Residents are strongly urged to stay away from any downed power lines and from trees that may have wires on or near them. If a line is energized, it can be deadly. There is no safe way to determine whether a power line is energizedβ€”always assume that it is.

City of Kalamazoo Public Services crews are actively working to clear downed trees across the city. However, in situations where trees are entangled with power lines, crews must wait for Consumers Energy to first de-energize and make the lines safe. As those lines are secured, City crews will move in immediately to continue debris removal.

Due to the volume of downed trees and power lines, response and cleanup efforts will take time. We ask for your patience and understanding as crews work as quickly and safely as possible using all available resources.

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping keep our community safe.
