๐Ÿš” The Township of Kalamazoo Police Department Announces Leadership Transition ๐Ÿš”

The Township of Kalamazoo Police Department (TKPD) proudly recognizes the retirement of Chief Scott Jackson, whose 25 years of dedicated and honorable service have left a lasting impact on both the department and the community.

Chief Jackson began his career with TKPD on November 15, 2000, and rose through the ranks to become the departmentโ€™s 12th Chief of Police. Throughout his career, he exemplified integrity, professionalism, and compassion, earning the respect of colleagues and community members alike.

In March 2025, a close family member of Chief Jackson received a life-changing medical diagnosis. After thoughtful consideration, Chief Jackson made the decision to retire in order to focus on supporting his family during this important time.

As TKPD honors Chief Jacksonโ€™s service and leadership, the Township of Kalamazoo is pleased to announce Lt. Darien Smith as the departmentโ€™s next Chief of Police.

Chief Smith began his career with TKPD on January 2, 2003 and has served the department in a variety of leadership and specialized roles, including Community Police Officer, Narcotics Detective, Field Training Officer, Road Patrol Sergeant, Administrative Sergeant, and Lieutenant of the Service and Patrol Divisions.

He holds a Bachelorโ€™s degree from Western Michigan University, a Masterโ€™s degree from Central Michigan University, and is a graduate of Michigan State Universityโ€™s School of Police Staff and Command.

Chief Smith will officially assume the position upon Chief Jacksonโ€™s retirement on May 8, 2026.

Please join us in thanking Chief Jackson for his service and dedication to the Township of Kalamazoo, and in congratulating Chief Smith.

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers from the Township of Kalamazoo Police Department responded to multiple reports of shots fired and a disturbance at a residence in the 2800 block of Crestview Avenue.

Dispatch received several 911 calls reporting Michael Vandenberg, was actively damaging the home, discharging a firearm inside the residence, making threats, and attempting to start a fire. Callers indicated items had been ignited in the kitchen that were extinguished prior to officersโ€™ arrival. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle before police arrived.

A short time later, officers located Vandenberg at a residence in the Westwood neighborhood. Upon seeing police, he fled in his vehicle, prompting a pursuit. The pursuit ended when the suspect returned to the Crestview Avenue residence, where he was taken into custody and later transported to the Kalamazoo County Jail where he was lodged.

A search warrant was executed at the Crestview Avenue residence, where officers recovered multiple fi****ms, ammunition, shell casings, and evidence related to controlled substances were located. No injuries to residents or officers were reported.

The case was forwarded to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutorโ€™s Office for review and the following charges were authorized:

โ€ข Weapons โ€“ Fi****ms โ€“ Discharge in/at Building
โ€ข Controlled Substance โ€“ Possession of Methamphetamine
โ€ข Police Officer โ€“ Fleeing โ€“ 3rd Degree

The Township of Kalamazoo Police Department was assisted by the Western Michigan University Police Department, Township of Kalamazoo Fire Department, and Life Ambulance.
