A Flood Watch is in effect for Kalamazoo through 2:00 a.m. Thursday due to the potential for heavy rainfall.

What's the difference?
• Flood Watch: Conditions are favorable for flooding. Be prepared and stay alert.
• Flood Warning: Flooding is occurring or imminent. Take action immediately.

If you live in a flood-prone area, monitor conditions closely and be prepared to take action if needed. Never drive through standing water or around barricades.

Stay safe, Kalamazoo!

The National Weather Service has provided updated guidance regarding this afternoon and evening’s severe weather potential for Kalamazoo. Current forecasts indicate the greatest risk period will begin around 4:00 PM and should move east of Kalamazoo by 11:00 PM at the latest.

The primary threat to Kalamazoo is heavy rainfall, followed by strong winds. The National Weather Service predicts total rainfall accumulations between 1 and 4 inches across the city, with amounts varying by location. Rainfall rates may be intense at times, particularly in localized areas. As a result, temporary urban flooding is likely in low-lying locations and areas with poor drainage.

Strong winds are also possible, although they are considered a lower-probability threat than excessive rainfall. Sustained winds of approximately 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected. Isolated thunderstorms may produce wind gusts approaching 60 mph, but those stronger wind speeds are not anticipated to be likely.

The risk of large damaging hail and tornadoes remains low; however, both hazards are possible and will continue to be monitored as conditions develop.
