The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners recently proclaimed June 2026 as Pride Month in Kalamazoo County, recognizing the contributions, resilience, and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Observed each June, Pride Month traces its roots to the Stonewall Uprising and serves as an opportunity to celebrate progress, reflect on challenges that remain, and reaffirm our commitment to creating welcoming communities where everyone is treated with dignity, honesty, respect, and fairness.

The proclamation also recognizes the work of OutFront Kalamazoo, which has served the LGBTQIA+ community of Southwest Michigan for the past 30 years by providing support, resources, and advocacy that help strengthen our region.

We join in recognizing Pride Month and the many individuals, organizations, and allies working to build a more inclusive Kalamazoo County for all.

More than $3.28 million in medical debt has now been eliminated for 7,786 Kalamazoo County residents through the County’s partnership with Undue Medical Debt.

As part of the latest round of relief, nearly 800 residents will receive letters in the mail notifying them that more than $700,000 in medical debt has been erased.

This effort was made possible through a $100,000 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) investment approved by the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners. On average, every $1 invested can eliminate approximately $100 in medical debt.

Residents do not apply for this program. Qualifying medical debt is identified and relieved automatically through Undue Medical Debt.

“Medical debt can create stress that extends far beyond a hospital bill,” said Board Chair Jen Strebs. “For thousands of residents, this effort means one less financial burden and greater peace of mind.”

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month was originally established in 1978 during the Carter Administration as a weeklong commemoration of the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of people from across Asia and the Pacific Islands. In 1992, it expanded to a full month.

Held in May, it commemorates significant dates such as the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was built with Chinese immigrant labor.

As this month comes to a close, we celebrate the rich heritage, contributions, and diverse cultures of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
