Today, members of our Honor Guard laid a wreath in honor of Chief Switalski on the 9th anniversary of his line-of-duty death at the Comstock Firefighters Memorial.

The day began with rain showers, but as the ceremony started, the rain gave way to sunshine. It was a fitting reminder that Chief Switalski’s presence and legacy continue to be felt throughout our department. We know he is watching over us, not only today, but every day, as we continue our mission of serving the community.

It was wonderful to see so many friends, firefighters, and community members join us in remembering Ed and honoring his sacrifice.

A special thank you to the Kzoo F.O.O.L.S. for hosting today’s memorial gathering and for providing an outstanding meal from Smoke & Tallow BBQ Co.

Chief Switalski’s sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his legacy continues to guide us every day.

Honoring Chief Ed Switalski – 9 Years Later

Today, June 14, we pause to remember and honor Chief Ed Switalski, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on June 14, 2017.

Nine years have passed, yet Chief Switalski's legacy remains deeply woven into the fabric of Comstock Fire & Rescue. His leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to serving others continue to inspire our members each and every day.

While time moves forward, we never forget. We remember the firefighter, the chief, the mentor, the friend, and the man who devoted his life to serving and protecting others. His impact can still be seen throughout our department. In the traditions we uphold, the standards we strive to meet, and the commitment to service he instilled in those who served alongside him.

Today, we honor Chief Switalski's sacrifice and remember the family, friends, and fellow firefighters who continue to carry his memory forward.

As we continue to serve the residents of Comstock Township, we do so with gratitude for those who came before us and with Chief Switalski's example guiding us forward. His legacy lives on not only in our department, but in the community he faithfully served.

Please join us in taking a moment to reflect on his life, his service, and the lasting impact he left on so many.

Stations 9-2 and 9-1 assisted Cooper FD this evening with a large tree on a vehicle with extrication on N Riverview Dr. Comstock stations remained backfilled with off duty personnel during this extended call.

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, on every level of your home, and in the basement. Larger homes may need additional alarms for adequate protection.

Push-In Ceremony – Ladder Truck 941

Yesterday evening, we were proud to hold a traditional Push-In Ceremony at Station 9-1 for our new Ladder Truck 941.

This meaningful fire service tradition began for our department in 2017 when we placed Engine 911 (then known as 913) into service in honor of fallen Chief Ed Switalski, and most recently with the addition of Engine 912. Last night, we were honored to continue that tradition with the arrival of Ladder 941.

Ladder 941 marks a significant milestone for Comstock Fire & Rescue. It is the department’s first ladder truck since the late 1980s, and for most members of our current roster, it is the first ladder truck they have ever served on. Housed at Station 9-1, Ladder 941 will enhance our ability to serve the community by expanding our operational capabilities and strengthening our emergency response efforts.

Residents may notice crews operating the apparatus throughout the community over the coming weeks as training continues. If you see us out and about, feel free to stop by, say hello, and check out Ladder 941.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Township Board and the residents of Comstock Township for their continued support. We also recognize the firefighters and leaders who served before us. Their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment helped build the foundation that allows us to continue moving the department forward today.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special event and for your continued support of Comstock Fire & Rescue. It was wonderful to see so many community members come out to celebrate this exciting addition to our fleet.

Tradition honors our past, while Ladder 941 helps prepare us for the future.

Closure on South 35th Street
Between East ML Avenue and Castle Creek Circle

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – June 4, 2026 – South 35th Street will be closed between East ML Avenue and Castle Creek Circle, beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, through Friday, July 24, 2026, for water infrastructure improvements.

Motorists should expect delays and are advised to follow the posted detour route. Access to all homes and local businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
