Black and indigenous women are facing atrocious charges while pregnant. from the settler-colonialist apparatus of the state, Kalamazoo, claiming to act on behalf of “The People ''-- On October 8, 2021, a group of activists and community members were asked to help defend the unhoused residents of the Ampersee encampment from being harassed by KDPS for rightfully trying to defend their homes, despite the inhumane claims of trespassing and While trying to assist another Black protestor was violently arrested by KDPS. He was in distress not receiving immediate medical attention, and officers were audibly denying and downplaying his injuries and condition, activist were assaulted and arrested, an Afro-Indigenous activist was rightfully trying to defend herself from an antagonistic Sergeant Hofer who had pepper sprayed, she is facing harsh charges for the actions of these officers. Throughout the entire court process, Monica has made it clear she wants to appeal the charges and fight for her rights because she was not in the wrong for trying to not only passist another Black member of the community, our vulnerable unhoused neighbors, but she had to defend herself in the moment. The State has fought tooth-and-nail to make the appeal process harder for Monica, including motions to refuse Monica to bring an EXPERT WITNESS to be on the stand and talk about the racial aspect of this whole struggle. As it should be clear after the last few years, the police do not serve the people. We saw this when George Floyd was murdered, we saw this when Breonna Taylor was murdered in her sleep, and we still see it to this day, with KDPS actively attempting to cover up Lindell Grisham ex*****on at the hand of KDPS officers.
at the direct order of Deputy City Manager Laura Lam, KDPS terrorizes members of our community in an effort to criminalize being unhoused, and subject them to State-sanctioned violence all because they are lower class, The fact that Kalamazoo is claiming to represent its people is a gross injustice, especially considering that the City of Kalamazoo itself would rather terrorize its citizens, especially the most vulnerable, than offer them the basic needs that they so desperately need. We know that Kalamazoo has had a coordinated effort to terrorize it’s unhoused community with KDPS at the head of it–acting police-chief Dave Boysen and board member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kalamazoo, has personally overseen the sweeps against the unhoused community. How can someone so vile claim to act on behalf of the People, OR even claim to care about the youth of the community when he just turns around and blatantly terrorizes our most vulnerable community members.

This country was founded on the ideals of Settler-Colonialism–for those who remember their US History, this was called “Manifest Destiny” where the Founding Fathers claimed that it was their God-given right to take the land from the “murderous savages” who we know today as our Indigenous Community. This land that we occupy currently is STOLEN LAND, and so any claims of trespassing from the Settler-Colonialist State should therefore be null-and-void because the State does not have a true claim to the land it so desperately wants to keep its hands on. The police force itself started from the days leading up to, and after the American Civil War: the very first police were runaway slave catchers, and once the 13th amendment was ratified their job was to arrest those who broke newly established “loitering laws”--laws that specifically targeted recently freed slaves who didn’t have homes of their own. As we know from the 13th amendment, slavery is outlawed “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted”--and thus we see the issue at hand, that has been around ever since ratification to our present day. This is why KDPS has been acting the way they have been to our community members: an unhoused member of the community, or an Afro-Indigenous mother is convicted of a bogus crime. This has always been the case, and will continue to be the case until WE THE PEOPLE demand changes to the system, until WE THE COMMUNITY stand up against the violence taking place in our own backyards and demand system change.

WE THE PEOPLE OF KALAMAZOO DEMAND THE CHARGES TO BE DROPPED AGAINST OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND WE DEMAND THAT KDPS AND THE CITY OF KALAMAZOO IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE VIOLENCE THEY ARE PERPETUATING ON STOLEN INDIGENOUS LAND

On May 17th, 2022, police descended on an encampment of 20 people to forcefully remove them from the land they had been staying on. The four property owners- including The Kalamazoo Nature Center and The Kalamazoo Community Foundation, approached KDPS to ask that they force residents off the land. Observers were on-site to document and pressure KDPS to have the legal paperwork required to enforce trespassing.

No official eviction date was ever provided to the resident and they were only notified the day before by community members.

As police and business reps entered camp, Public Safety Chief Vernon Coakley told residents that they needed to immediately leave. The observers present were also asked to leave. A Black resident was cited for trespassing, and observers were pushed further and further away.

At one point a resident in crisis was involuntarily committed by the police and advocates were not allowed to reach her.

Public Safety Chief Coakley made his own decisions about what properties observers were not allowed on, eventually arresting someone after he had complied with being asked to move.

Encampment sweeps are a heartbreaking thing to witness, but it pales in comparison to being chased from your home by police officers every couple of weeks, unable to find anywhere to rest. Homelessness is criminalized by a government that stole it’s land from Potawatomi people, and continues its legacy of brutal displacement today by refusing to allow people to live on the land, institutions like The Kalamazoo Community Foundation and the Kalamazoo Nature Center have access to plenty of resources money and land to allow those unhoused in their communities to live peacefully. Both organizations use the language of social equity, but on Tuesday showed exactly how they felt about our unhoused community members.

Please help us pressure Kalamazoo City Management, City Commissioners, the Mayor, the Kalamazoo Nature Center and the Kalamazoo Community Foundation. To address the unconstitutional sweeps and to live up the language of social equity, with meaningful changes to ordinances and policies which keep people oppressed and houseless.

Stop police Brutality.
Atop Evicting our neighbors.
Stop the sweeps

Text for description:
DIGITAL BLAST: email & phone on Tuesday 5/24/22 8AM-5PM at any time you have during that work day please! We must make it clear that this community wants to BE A COMMUNITY. That means moving with CARE not VIOLENCE. Housing is A HUMAN RIGHT!

Two Kalamazoo non-profits have NOT been showing up for community as they claim: Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC) and Kalamazoo Community Foundation (KZCF). We must hold them accountable for these actions when the city is elevating violence against the unhoused and other marginalized people.

What Happened? Kzoo Sweeps:

The Urban Nature Park is owned by Nature Ventures, INC. The board for this company has the same people as the KNC.
Last week, KNC signed an authorization for KDPS to arrest "trespassers" on their land in downtown Kzoo.
The Urban Nature Park is a FREE, OPEN PARK. There are no posted rules, people are allowed to come and go as they please

After KNC & KDPS coordinated to displace over 60 people on May 17th, some made their way to the KZCF parking lot on 402 E. Michigan Ave.
"The Kalamazoo Community Foundation allowed them to stay there temporarily and asked them to leave by Friday, Stanard said. About seven tents were there Friday." May 20th
“I guess they’re trying to get some U-Hauls here and move us,” Stanard said. He and others mentioned" moving to another location in Kzoo

SCRIPT: “Unhoused people, OUR NEIGHBORS, are continuously displaced in these violent cycles with KDPS and Kalamazoo non-profits. The city claims that camping anywhere in city limits is ILLEGAL, but NO LAW EXISTS! Illegal policies like camping bans do nothing but make homelessness worse and keep people trapped in a cycle. We demand HOUSING NOT CRIMINALIZATION we see what you are doing and we want you to use city and non-profit resources to create sustainable support for our unhoused neighbors! Homes, not jails!”

This Friday there will be march and teach in organized by BLM kzoo/BC please join us, to speak out against police brutality in Kalamazoo, and listen to those who have been affected by KDPS violence. It is imperative that we pressure city leadership to act on these concerns of violence before it escalates. We must hold Jim Ritsema and Lara Lam for ordering the continuous sweeps of houseless camps throughout the winter. We need accountability for the inhumane conditions and lack of transparency in Kalamazoo jails. We need to apply pressure on the city commission to pressure the city attorney to drop the charges against hotop 10, and add to the agenda a discussion about solutions for the sweeps.
Gathering area to be announced, please share

This Friday we will have a march and teach-in. We hope community will support our first time back out since we organized a march and rally in memory of James Dunnigan, a local Black man who died in police custody in 2016 after being denied medical treatment.

There have been more names to lift up affected by police violence, police brutality and charges for Black activists, and unhoused folks (which includes Black neighbors) that we need to be speaking up about. We want to intervene on KDPS sanctioned police violence before we have another name to lift up. We need to be honest about what those inside of the jails are experiencing here. We also need to apply pressure to commissioners to tell the city attorney to get the prosecutor to drop these damn charges. We need the commissioners to also place on the agenda options to the sweeps for the unhoused. Enough is enough.

It takes everyone leaning in. Stay tuned for more info on where to gather.
