Hawai'i Community College — Pālamanui is part of the University of Hawai'i system and is administered by Hawai'i Community College in Hilo. The entire University of Hawai'i system serves West Hawai'i through the UH Center at West Hawai'i, which will continue to be located at Hawai'i CC – Palamanui as a base to support distance learning.

Mālama ‘Āina Opportunities at Hawai'i CC - Pālamanui!
Join the fun every month at Hawai'i Community College
- Pālamanui in the campus Botanical Garden and 706-acre Forest Preserve. On the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m., a group of students, staff, and community allies gather to put their aloha ‘āina into action restoring the endangered lowland tropical dry forest and cleaning ancient trails.

“Many hands make the work light,” and all are welcome. For those
unable to make the “Second Saturday,” arrangements can be made for volunteering on other days and times. Contact Dr. Richard Stevens at [email protected] for details.

The Ēlama & Hilo One program is looking to fill a Student Ambassador position located at Hawaiʻi CC–Pālamanui Campus. The Ēlama & Hilo One program is a project funded by generous community donors and is a part of the University of Hawaii’s 13th Year Initiative. The initiative is to support non-college-bound students in their first year at Hawaiʻi Community College.

As a Student Ambassador, you will have the following opportunities:
- Gain clerical and professional experience
- Network with fellow scholars, Hawaiʻi CC kauhale, and community donors
- Leadership skills: Communication, project management, and service
- Professional development

Executive Chef Kalych Padro of Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection shared his Puerto Rican culinary heritage with Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui Culinary Arts students during a November workshop at the Kona campus.

His presentation included Puerto Rican history and the unique tools, techniques and products used in the island’s cooking. He also connected Puerto Rican cuisine to Hawai‘i’s plantation days and showed how traditional recipes evolved in the islands based in available ingredients. Students then divided into three teams and prepared sofrito, mofongo, fufu, mangu and shrimp and chicken stew.

“The class was awesome and exceeded my expectations,” said Hawai‘i CC – Pālamanui Culinary Arts student Kai Kale said. “I had no idea that plantains and Puerto Rican cuisine were this delicious.”

The workshop was a partnership with the Hawai'i Culinary Education Foundation, and included students from Kohala High School and West Hawaii Explorations Academy
