My name is Zahz Manawapou HewLen, born and raised right in Kailua-Kona. I graduated from Kealakehe High School in 2013 as a Student body officer. As an Eagle Scout, involved in many youth programs, and raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I grew up in service to my community. I left home for a time to serve others, gain an education, and establish myself professionally. I rec
eived an education from Salt Lake Community College, Southern Utah University, and Stringham Real Estate School. My professional background involves many leadership positions at a young age in the corporate space before transitioning into the Real Estate industry while in Utah. I grew a passion for assisting others in finding the safety and security of a space to call home and brought that passion to Hawai'i Island with me in hopes of serving my community. For the last three years I have been on the frontlines of our housing crisis and in that time have discovered the web of issues that are all connected. Our housing crisis is just one piece of the whole. I also own my own startup business, Kukui Mauli, which is built as a reflection of the way my kupuna cared for their spiritual and physical bodies using native plants. I am a Native Hawaiian and Maori, learner and cultural practitioner of haka, hula, oli, and arts. Aloha is really the only way of life I know and carry that in my work life holistically approaching problems, staying grounded, innovative, connected, and moving all in the right alignment. I'm running because two years sounds like a short time but it's a very long time for many people to go without vital resources and systems in place that offer a sustainable, vibrant life. I want to win because we need to treat the entirety of our ecological system to bring every piece of it back into balance and alignment with our culture, values, community, and land. District 7 has a lot of work to do. We need competent leaders who can listen to experts including Kupuna and cultural advisors before making critical decisions. We need an advocate in the Mayor's office to get funding for critical projects in District 7 with negotiating skills and a collaborative, working relationship with whoever the Mayor is. As an island with Native people, it's important to have indigenous minds in these decision-making spaces. Coming up with innovative housing solutions, humans living on the streets and parks, updating infrastructure that threatens health and safety, healthcare accessibility (especially for our elderly), providing ample opportunity to receive quality education, expanding animal control resources, adding more recreation, and integrating Olelo Hawai'i learning tools are just some of the topics that I seek to address in District 7. I look forward to sharing my ideas, but I'm most excited to listen to yours.
