🔥 Fire Fact Friday: 24 Hours on Duty

Did you know our firefighter/paramedics work 24-hour shifts?

Our full-time crews generally work 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off, with three shifts rotating to provide around-the-clock coverage.

During those 24 hours, crews respond to emergency calls while also completing daily training, inspecting and maintaining apparatus and equipment, completing reports, participating in public education and community activities, exercising, preparing meals and taking care of the fire station.

And yes — they sleep at the firehouse, too! But emergency calls don’t stop at bedtime. When the tones go off, crews are up and responding whether it’s 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning.

A 24-hour shift means the fire station isn’t just where our crews report to work — for that day, it’s where they eat, train, work and sleep, all while remaining ready to respond when our community needs them.

24 hours a day. 365 days a year. Always ready to respond.

🔥 Quick Thinking Made a Big Difference 🔥

Recently, our crews responded to a vehicle fire that was threatening a nearby home. The fire began in a rear compartment of a work truck parked between two residences.

The vehicle owner noticed the fire, used a fire extinguisher while it was still small, and was able to move the truck away from the homes and into the street. By the time our crews arrived, the vehicle was burning with heat already beginning to damage the siding of the neighboring home.

His quick actions helped prevent what could have become a much more serious incident involving one—or potentially multiple—homes.

It’s a great reminder that a little preparation can make a BIG difference when seconds count:

🔥 Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms throughout your home and test them regularly.
🧯 Keep a fire extinguisher accessible and, just as importantly, know how to use it before you need it. Remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
🚪 Know when to get out. Fire extinguishers are intended for small, contained fires when you have a clear escape route. If a fire is growing, producing significant smoke, or you’re unsure you can safely extinguish it, get out and call 911.
🚗 Be aware of vehicles, grills, fire pits and other potential heat or fire sources near your home. Maintaining distance from structures can help prevent a small fire from becoming a structure fire.

Our crews were able to extinguish the remaining fire, check the neighboring residence for extension, and confirm that the fire had not spread inside the home.

Sometimes fire prevention is smoke alarms and safety plans. Sometimes it’s having the right equipment nearby and knowing what to do with it. Preparation matters—and in this case, it helped protect a neighbor’s home.

Stay safe, look out for one another, and make sure your home is prepared before an emergency happens. ❤️🚒

Do you know everything your Fire District does?

When most people think of the fire department, the first thing that comes to mind is probably pretty obvious: fires. 🔥

And while fire suppression is certainly an important part of what we do, it's only one piece of the services Roberts Park Fire Protection District provides every day.

Our firefighter/paramedics respond to medical emergencies, vehicle crashes and rescues, hazardous conditions, fire alarms, carbon monoxide incidents, gas leaks, technical rescue situations, and—of course—fires.

But our work doesn't begin and end with 911 calls.

Throughout the year, our members also train, conduct fire inspections and pre-incident planning, provide CPR and fire & life safety education, install smoke alarms through grant-funded programs, participate in community events, and work with our community partners to identify and reduce risks before they become emergencies.

And when a larger or more complex emergency occurs, we work alongside neighboring fire departments and specialized regional teams to bring additional resources to the people who need them.

So while "fire" is in our name, our mission is much bigger than fighting fires.

Everything we do—from emergency response to training, prevention and public education—has the same goal: protecting the lives and property of the people we serve.

🔥 Sunday Training: Building Construction & Roof Operations 🪜

It might be Sunday, but there’s always something to learn.

Today, Gold Shift spent time reviewing building and roof construction and, more importantly, how what we see on the outside of a building helps guide the decisions we make during a fire.

From the top of our hose tower, Lt. Baron reviewed the different roof types and construction features found throughout our district, discussing how firefighters use that information to determine if, where, and how a building can be safely ventilated.

Back on the ground, crews took advantage of our roof training prop currently under construction to review different ways to position ground ladders for safe and effective roof access.

Building construction is one of the foundations of firefighting. Knowing how a building is put together helps us anticipate how fire and smoke may travel, recognize potential hazards, and make better tactical decisions. And there’s no substitute for being able to study the actual types of homes, businesses, and buildings we respond to every day.

Every training session adds another tool to the toolbox—and another layer of preparation for when it matters most.

Did you know Roberts Park Fire Protection District isn't actually a department of the Village of Justice or the City of Hickory Hills?

It's one of the most common misconceptions we hear, and it's easy to understand why.

While we proudly serve the communities of Justice and Hickory Hills, Roberts Park Fire Protection District is actually its own unit of local government, created specifically to provide fire protection, emergency medical services, rescue, public education, community risk reduction, and other emergency services to the residents and visitors within our district.

Unlike a municipal fire department that operates as a department within a city or village government, a fire protection district is governed by its own Board of Trustees and operates independently to fulfill its mission of protecting the communities it serves.

That doesn't mean we work alone. Every day, we partner with our local police departments, public works, Southwest Central Dispatch, neighboring fire departments, schools, businesses, and many other organizations to provide the highest level of service possible.

This is the first post in our new series, where we'll answer common questions about your Fire District, introduce you to the people and equipment behind the scenes, and give you a closer look at what it takes to provide emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

🎓 Paramedic school: COMPLETE. National Registry: PASSED. Time to celebrate 🎉👩‍🍳🔥

Congratulations to Firefighter Pereyra, who recently graduated from paramedic school and passed the National Registry Paramedic exam on her first attempt!

Finishing paramedic school is no small accomplishment, and after all that hard work, Firefighter/Paramedic Martina decided there was only one appropriate way to celebrate at the firehouse — hibachi night for the shift. 😂

We’re incredibly proud of Martina and all the work she put in to reach this milestone…and the rest of the crew was more than happy to help her celebrate.

Congratulations, Firefighter/Paramedic Martina! 🚑🔥
