Fire Prevention Week Tip 5 | Keep a safe distance for your portable heaters!

As temperatures continue to drop, portable heaters can help you warm but can also be a serious fire risk if they are too close to things that can burn.

Keep your portable heaters at least three feet away from furniture, curtains, bedding and clothing, and make sure your heater is on a hard, even surface where it will not be knocked over.

Always plug your portable heater directly into a wall outlet, and NEVER use an extension cord or power strip. And most importantly; make sure you ALWAYS turn your heater off whenever you leave the room.

Taking these precautions now can help you stay warm and reduce the risk of a home fire during the colder months. For more safety tips, visit https://www.nfpa.org/downloadable-resources/safety-tip-sheets/electric-portable-space-heater-safety

Fire Prevention Week Tip 4 | Inspect your smoke alarms and make a plan.

Having working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan can help make a life-saving difference.

Swap the batteries in your fire alarms every six months, and make sure your family knows where, and how to escape the home in the event of a fire.

Fire Prevention Week Tip 3 | Prevent a clothes dryer fire!

Doing laundry is likely a daily task, and it’s important you know how to take care of your dryer to ensure the safety of your home.

Make sure you regularly clean the lint filter before and after every load of laundry, removing any lint that has collected around the drum.

It’s also crucial that, at least once a year, you are checking to make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and that the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating.

If you are noticing it’s taking a little longer than normal for your clothes to dry, it’s a sign that it’s time to clean the lint out of the vent pipe.

Every season brings something new to our homes, and October is the perfect time to prepare for what’s ahead.

Before winter arrives, set aside some time to:
• Check your pipes and protect any exposed plumbing
• Inspect your heating system
• Seal drafts around doors and windows
• Replace the batteries in all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
• Stock up on spare air filters, batteries, and other winter essentials

A little preparation can help protect you and your home in every season.

Fire Prevention Week Tip 2 | Never leave your kitchen unattended!

As the temperatures cool and you have soups cooking on the stove, it’s important you never leave your kitchen unattended.

Keep your pot handles turned inward, and keep any kitchen towels, oven mitts, or paper products away from the stovetop.

Cooking fires can happen in an instant, and a few simple precautions can help keep your kitchen and home, safe!

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and we are coming to you to share everyday tips and habits that can help prevent fires.

Fire Prevention Week Tip 1 | Unplug your device when it is fully charged!

Leaving a device plugged in once it’s fully charged can increase the heat and stress on a battery, which can decrease the battery life or cause a preventable fire.
